Conn. Can Bar Scouts As Charity
Mon Jul 29, 5:40 PM ET

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Connecticut did not violate the rights of the Boy Scouts when it dropped the group from a list of charities that state employees contribute to through a payroll deduction plan, a federal judge has ruled.

A state panel removed the Boy Scouts from the list in 2000, after a state human rights commission found that including the organization violates state anti-discrimination laws because of the scouts' ban on gay troop leaders.

The Irving, Texas-based Boy Scouts and a Connecticut scouting council filed a discrimination lawsuit against the state, arguing that exclusion from the list violated the group's First Amendment rights.

In a decision dated July 22, U.S. District Judge Warren Eginton ruled in favor of the state.

"I am gratified by the court's decision," state Comptroller Nancy Wyman said Monday. "It just basically states that the state of Connecticut does not, and cannot by law, do business with organizations that discriminate."

The Connecticut State Employee Campaign Committee hires the United Way to collect employee payroll deductions. In 1999, state employees directly contributed $9,950 to the Boy Scouts, which also received a portion of $200,000 that was not designated for any one charity.

A lawyer for the Boy Scouts said the group would appeal.

"We remain confident that the Boy Scouts will be successful," attorney George Davidson said Monday. They "have been singled out on the basis of viewpoint."

Gay rights groups welcomed Eginton's ruling.

"The ruling makes clear that while the Boy Scouts may be allowed to discriminate, they are not entitled to any special privileges from the state," said Karen Loewy, an attorney with the Gay & Lesbian Advocates and & Defenders.

I wonder if this applies to affirmative action, set asides, quotas, minority only scholarships, etc. If these programs are not discrimination, I do not know what is...

Basically, the State of Connecticut is sticking its thumb in the faces of tens of thousands of Connecticut Boy Scout parents. I've been involved in Boy Scouts (and Cub Scouts) for many years, and my sons benefit greatly from the program. The vast, vast, vast majority of scout parents are perfectly tolerant toward gays - in the sense that they're fine with gays living their lives the way want. But the same vast, vast, vast majority of scout parents 1) don't want gay ideology taught to their sons, 2) don't want gay behavior modeled for their adolescent sons and 3) know that there is significant danger of homoexual molestation when homosexual men are in close quarters with teenage boys (as in the Catholic Church, with now thousands of teenage boy / homosexual priest molestations on its hands). Finally, a great many parents have religious objections to homosexuality. The Democrats wonder why they have lost 'market share' over the years in Congress and in the state governments. This is a classic reason why. The average parent knows it's a BAD idea to put homosexual men in charge of adolescent boys in the woods. But the State of Connecticut is now trying to enforce its homosexual version of morality on the state's parents. They are making enemies of average parents. They're stupid. Boy Scouts is having some difficulties with funding in different places as it moves from government funding to private funding. But so be it. Private donors are coming forth from everywhere, making up for the losses. The organization is growing nicely. (In our town, our troop has DOUBLED in size, and we've added another large troop in the last year.) Parents are realizing that it's an organization that provides: support for reverence for God and traditional morality, training in the rights and duties of citizenship in this country, fantastic outdoorsmanship training, protection from homosexual molestation and gay ideology, role models who show how to be good husbands and fathers, training in many area of useful knowledge, and superb leadership training. The gays are alienating millions and millions of parents across the country. They're being really, really stupid.

Au Contraire! See, "Tolerance" in the New PC World means outright admiration, or to condone.

Avoid like the plague United Way. Even when you specify that you want your donations targeted towards a specific charity, it does *not* work the way you envisioned.

These people are just P.O'd that the Boy Scouts have not lain down on the tracks to be steam-rolled by the P.C. train, and have to use crooked judges to enforce their fascist agenda. The Scouts will prevail on this issue, trust me.

She needs to say that over and over again to herself until it actually means something.

Can you give more detail on this statement, because I've been curious about this myself?

A LOT of people in my town refuse now to give to the United Way. Here, the United Way has actually sent letters telling parents that they may still designate Boy Scouts as their preferred charity, though the U.W. can't deign to specifically list it. Fat chance! The United Way decided to support the homosexual ideology. Parents are deciding not to. A lot of parents these days (myself included) are giving a lot more to the Boy Scouts. In truth, no other organization (including my sexually corrupt Catholic Church), and with the help of many good and super volunteer fathers, has done more to help me raise my sons the way I would like them to be raised. The Boy Scouts is a great organization, and is a boon to society.

CIVIL RIGHTS GONE MAD. The Boy Scouts, as a private ethical organization, have every right to exclude sodomites.

I hope the Scouts appeal this one and I hope Connecticut State Employees refuse to contribute to the state sponsored United Way. I, personally, will NEVER give these Sodomite supporting b@stards one dime of charity support - ever.

The attack continues.

This issue should really be settled on common sense alone. You do not have men taking teenage girls camping. You should not have gays taking young boys camping. Whether or not most are upstanding and will resist temptation, some will not. There is no need to go any further with this subject.

Boy isn't that the truth. (And I was talking about how gay and lesbians want "special privileges" themselves.)

How true!!! Drop the leftist UW and give directly to the Boy Scouts. The homosexuals have ruined so many good institutions in the USA. Let's support the Boy Scouts with our money.

Avoid like the plague United Way.

You are right about that. The United Way collects money in the name of charities and then decides what allocations to make to which charities. But the allocations are not directly tied to the donations. If the United Way decides that the Boy Scouts should get a certain sum, then directed donations to the Boy Scouts could be ten times that much and the Boy Scouts will not see a penny more.

They are our betters, after all. More worthy and wise than us peons. It bears repeating:

Avoid like the plague United Way.

The United Way, again. The United Way has a virtual monopoly on on-the-job fundraising from government employees at all levels. The pressure to contribute is enormous; the Unied Way does spectacularly well. Eliminating the Boy Scouts from the state employee donation card means that the Boy Scouts are placed at a decided disadvantage in fundraising. Yes, they are free to fundraise on their own, and should.

But perhaps the whole United Way monopoly should be shattered and eliminated. Why should taxpayers be forced to support one private fundraising entity (all those employee rallies and loaned executive paychecks are being paid for out of the public purse) especially when that entity is being used to advance a political agenda?

I don't expect a federal judge from Connecticut to agree, but the good citizens and concerned parents of Connecticut ought to stand up and fight.

Why is the state allowed to descriminate? It looks like the state is promoting homosexuality.

This is the crux of the United Way - it thinks it knows better than you do where to give YOUR money! We should not give away our freedom so easily.

Yeah. I worked for a large consulting firm in New York City, and I was told that if I didn't help the head of the firm meet his United Way fund-raising goals, that would be noted on my record. I said fine, note it, but let me provide you a list of the other charities I've decided to help out myself. Nothing happened to me. The United Way runs basically as an EXTORTIONIST agency (sort of like the Jesse Jacksons of this world). Just say no.
