I had a Dodge Aspen (Volare). And yes, the article describes it exactly. Every time it rained, it stalled. It was scary to drive. I owned it 10 years, out of which 6 it didn't work at all. But I always thought it was pretty. Of course, a car that is pretty doesn't do you any good if it doesn't get you anywhere....

The prettiest car I ever owned, and one of the prettiest ever made, was my burgandy 1951 Mercury. It had uncanny powers. Under a cloudless sky it was flawless. But it knew when a cloud was about to come over the horizon and would tell me by beginning to cough. Long before rain started to fall, it would head for the side of the road and go into hibernation. I sold it to a meterologist, who became rich and famous using that Merc to predict the weather.

Amazing that the Aspen/Volare were named "Motor Trend Car of the Year" in 1976. So much for the so-called experts.

I had a '76 Volare and drove it 130,000 miles. Most of te sheet metal rusted through in the first year, and we don't have road salt. Somewhere along the way the floor rusted through for the back seat passengers.

But it ran ok after replacing the carb ($89) plus tax, plus an occasional replacement of some kind of resistor ($3.95), and a couple of starter motors.

The original carburator was junk. The replacement worked fine.
