I thought the Pinto got a bum rap. I drove a Pinto into the 300,000 mile range with only the usual maintenance one would expect with an aging car. It looked bad but it always got there.

The fact that it look like crap (as did those horrible AMC Pacers) was a contributing factor.

No, the rap was well deserved. On a corporate level, the car cost Ford a lot of money.

Seems appropriate, since it was a bum car (and not because of those overblown, overhyped, phonier-than-a-Clinton-oath gas tank collisions - of course your gas tank is going to blow if you get plowed from behind by something going 50 mph or better and the tank is no bigger than a vacuum cleaner!). On the other hand, the Maverick was an even worse excuse for a compact car.

I had a 1973 Pinto, it lasted 68,000 miles, and the engine went quits. Traded it in on a new 1981 Datsun 310. Another collasal mistake.
