Left in extreme heat of car, baby dies

By SHARON TURCO, sturco@news-press.com

A 1-year-old Lehigh Acres boy died after his parents left him in their car minivan for more than four hours Sunday afternoon, authorities said.

Daniel McCray?s second birthday would have been next month.

Dr. Doug Kelley, of the District 21 Medical Examiner?s Office was scheduled to perform an autopsy today.

How Daniel died may be determined then, said Lt. Barry Futch, of the Lee County Sheriff?s Office.

David and Jo Ann McCray, of 4111 Seventh St. W., in Lehigh Acres,Florida refused to comment Monday.

?I know they would never have done this on purpose,? said Reiko Ginac, Daniel?s maternal grandmother.

Futch said the McCrays returned from church with their five children at about 1 p.m. Sunday, letting Daniel out of his car seat but leaving him in the van.

The McCrays noticed Daniel was missing at about 6 p.m., as the McCrays were getting ready to return to church, Futch said.

They found him laying under the minivan?s second seat. They called 911, but Daniel was already dead, Futch said.

Bring them to Southern Nevada about now..put them in a car with windows up..or even cracked slightly like some fools do with their pets..and watch the temps get to 180 in less than 15 minutes. I tell you the children and pets die horrible deaths.

We got about 120 degrees today, hotter than Death Valley. A reporter told me the worst they saw was a 2 year old girl who had torn all her hair out before she died.

These parents are too stupid to breed.

Why is it only children that you hear this happening to? I never hear stories of dogs or cats "accidentally" left in a car. Reguardless, I feel that this should be considered and procsecuted as negligent homocide

These stories get a little like the ones about some irresponsible moron's attack dogs mauling kids in the neighborhood. How many times does the same script have to be replayed before they figure out the obvious?

"Nearly all vehicles now seem to have electric windows up and down".

And some mini-vans have an auto door lock feature too.

Makes me cringe when I read stories like this, since my wife and I have a baby that is only 6 days old.

I can relate to a personal experience with a child locked in a van..

When I worked for a chrysler dealership I had to go to a local sand pit and use a slim jim to open a Chrysler town and country mini van up for a woman who had called the dealership, she was crying and explained that her baby was stuck in the van. The van was still running with her keys in the ignition.
It was mid July and about 80 degrees in the shade, but the van was in the wide open & it was black. Luckily she had left the AC on full blast and the baby was alright, the baby was locked in the van for a total of about 30 minutes.

It turned out that her husband worked at the sand pit as a truck driver and she was stopping by to see him for lunch but he was out on a delivery.

What happened was since the van was still running, the auto lock feature re-engaged when she exited the vehicle.

So if you have this feature on you vehicle remember to be careful, and if you have to, smash out a window in the vehicle.

Life is too precious, especially the lives of little ones.

Take care
