St. Barbara was one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers who appeared to St. Joan of Arc. She was disenfranchised by Rome a number of years ago, like St. Christopher, but devotion to her was extremely widespread from the 7th century on. The Greek Orthodox church still venerates her as a major saint, and for those under her special protection (like artillerymen, fireworks makers, and miners) the removal from the calendar hasn't made a lot of difference.
My husband was raised Methodist, but that didn't stop him from having a St. Barbara medal on his fireworker's coveralls . . . &;-D It apparently hasn't disconcerted the artillerymen either - the Order of St. Barbara down at Fort Sill is very much alive and well.
Thanks for this info AnAmericanMother, and a big thank you to St Barbara.
