MOSCOW: Unidentified plotters in Saudi Arabia were behind an attempted bombing in southern Russia which was averted by the police last week, security sources told the RIA Novosti news agency on Wednesday.
A source from the Federal Security Service (FSB) was quoted as saying that "the order came from Saudi Arabia," and that those who were supposed to carry out the bombing were all based in Russia's separatist republic of Chechnya.
Russian police said they had prevented a huge bomb attack Friday after discovering a truck in the southern region of Stavropol loaded with a plastic explosive that would have caused a blast equivalent to 800 kilograms (1,760 pounds) of TNT.
Police said they had made several arrests in the case.
Some 21 people were killed in two explosions in the Stavropol region in March 2001 in attacks pinned on rebels in neighboring Chechnya.
Nearly 300 people died in four explosion in Russia in mid-1999, attacks that led to the launch of the current war in separatist Chechnya.

Bomb was apparently recovered. I wonder how similar it is to the bombs used in Karachi, OKC, and the East African embassy bombings.

Our "friends" the Saudis are the source of much of the conflict in the world. Bush should put them at the top of the Axis of Evil list. It's disconcerting that our State Dept is full of Arabists who need a good *ss-reaming before they'll see the light.

I have a feeling, not quite a prediction, that the Saud monopoly of power may not survive the coming events in Baghdad.
I believe, and I think they believe, that they cannot survive the presence of a secular, semi-democratic Baghdad. Even if they do, they go from being very important to us, to being fairly unimportant. And a regime that has become as annoying as they are cannot afford to be unimportant to us. Another strike against their long term survival.
And OPEC will not survive the tripling of Iraqi oil production.

Wouldn't you just love it if we built up in the region, saying we were going to attack Iraq, and then just launched a Blitzkrieg against Saudi Arabia instead? Call it the 51st state and pump all the oil we want!

The Saudis are a despicapable lot who've been financing proxy wars from the Phillippines to Manhattan. Osama's estrangement from the TentofSaud is a fiction. Thye've financed murderous bloodshed and through the use of cutouts and proxy warriors held at arms length have managed to cultivate the fiction that they are not jihadis when in their dark hearts, they glorify and anticipate an islamic deadening upon the world crushing America, Japan, Russia, India and Israel; a crushing monochramatic Wahhabi version of reality which doesn't allow boys to fly kites orgirls to study.
It is too bad that our economic interests hinder and forestall our survival imperatives.
Similar to how certain people might have felt in the 1930's when contemplating Nazi Germany and the myriad, lucrative transactions between Wall Street, Corporate America and the Germans.

51st state? Think what you ask for...30 million lazy bastards that'll expect the rest of you to treat them like princes and who can't even wipe their arses for themselves. Besides, one division should scatter most of these idiots back to their camels.
