Ward Connerly again.
As if a year that has given us corporate criminality, pedophile priests and a new Adam Sandler movie were not already odious enough, now the notorious University of California regent is back in the headlines. You remember Connerly, the black -- and he would probably disavow that characterization -- activist who spearheaded the successful 1996 drive to end affirmative action in Golden State government and universities and, more recently, failed to do the same thing in Florida.

Pitts thinks that there can be no "informed discussion of the impact of race on migration, education, labor, criminal justice, politics, poverty, home buying, loan seeking, entrpreneurship, unwed motherhood" etc. without racial accounting. Then he does a 180 and says that it is impossible to hide his heritage etc.
My question is, why would his heritage be an issue if the liberals were not constantly shoving it in our face with quotas, diversity training, and hyphenated nationalities (with America last of course)? Mr. Pitts specifically rails about the issue of conservative bemoaning hyphenation like it is a badge of honor, but in reality, it is more akin to the yellow "Juden" stars of David that Jews in prewar Germany were forced to wear, or the tatooing of concentration camp prisoners. The only difference is that the tatoos are self applied.
Why should it make a difference what the color of the kids are when failing school, when the real issue is why public schools are failing all students?
The diversity crowd insists on telling us we are all equal, but unequal. Huh? They are really trying to emulate the qualities of the old Soviet Union, where "everybody is equal, but some people were more equal than others." He would be less likely to encounter the "insult" of white people saying that they don't "see him as black," if he weren't making it issue #1.
Is it really important to know that Jerry Seinfeld is Jewish to enjoy his comedy? I can appreciate Halle Berry as a woman, but is it an issue? BTW, why was Ms. Berry heralded as the first "black" woman to win an Oscar, when she is half white? That never seemed to be mentioned.
No one is asking anyone to bleach themselves or be any less proud of their ancestry, but treating representatives of different cultures with fairness, equality and compassion does not require quotas and other means of racially segregating and profiling American citizens. People who come here to enjoy the wealth, prosperity, opportunity and freedom that the U.S. offers should not try to abuse the system for personal or political gain, nor put their old country ahead of this country once they have taken the oath of citizenship. Once you have spoken the oath, you are an American, period (apologies to other North and South American inhabitants; in this context, "American" denotes U.S. citizen). If you were born here, be thankful, and stop tearing down the system.
No, to achieve the above objectives of fairness and equality, Ward Connerly is precisely correct: the sooner we stop making race an issue, the sooner it will stop being one. Leonard Pitts wouldn't have a job if he couldn't whine about racial issues.
What's insulting is that our government should treat us differently, depending on our racial and ethnic backgrounds. The government has no intrinsic right to such information. If the majority of Californians isn't for it, then good riddance to the odious practice of making an industry out of racial and ethnic differences. It's time to let go. Bravo for Mr. Connerly!
There's no overall agenda here, right?
They would either forget the differences or, more likely, breed them out of existance. Never underestimate the power of raging hormones and skimpy beach wear.
I love this guy. Finally, a lib gets it right. Yes, conservatives believe in a colorblind America. This is what we have always stood for, even during the bad old days.
One of the great joys of life in this nation is the fact that its culture is actually the rich admixture of many cultures.
I agree. I love that about us.
And to treat representatives of those cultures with fairness, equality and compassion.
Again, no argument on the fairness part, but the catch is this: You are not a "representative of a culture" when you stand before the law. And you must not be. You are you.
Furthermore, although you may see yourself as an extension of some kind of racial heritage, I just see you as you.
Instead, Ward Connerly offers this shoddy attempt at social engineering.
No, Connerly is trying to put an end to social engineering. We are not a collection of warring tribes. You are not an African prince and I am not a Saxon day laborer. We are Americans. Whatever the history that brought us to this moment, this is what we are.
Well said.
Remember the words of J.C. Watts: "Race baiters and poverty pimps," which so accurately described those promoting this "thinking."
I am going to sorely miss him.
