Offices of Governor's Staffmembers Burglarized
The Governor's Office of Planning and Research was burglarized early Tuesday morning. Investigators from the California Highway Patrol are trying to determine whether it was more than the work of common criminals.
The office houses some of the governor's legislative and policy staff. It's located across the street from the State Capitol.
A janitor discovered the breakin early Tuesday morning when he noticed a basement window left ajar with a ladder to the floor.
The entire building was then closed down so CHP investigators could determine what, if anything, was taken. They found offices ransacked and drawers pulled open. They say there are no signs of senseless vandalism, and some small amounts of food and petty cash were left alone.
CHP Commissioner Dwight "Spike" Helmick speculated on what the thieves might have been after. "There's permitting issues, parole issues, legislation issues," said Helmick. "You can only assume, potentially, there's a lot of policy issues that are worked on so people could have a lot of documentation on a variety of different issues."
The CHP will send in a team of high-tech investigators to determine if any data on the 50 or so computers in the building was compromised.
