Archbishop Gilbert wants T&T to march against abortion
By SATEESH MAHARAJ
Roman Catholic Archbishop Edward Gilbert has called on the people of this country to vote against the culture of death and join in tomorrows march against abortion.
In a statement distributed yesterday at a news conference called by members of the Emmanuel Community at their Woodbrook headquarters, Gilbert said: We believe pro-life legislation is a positive alternative based on spiritual, philosophical and medical truth, to the culture of death legislation that is being proposed by anti-life agencies.
He added: Such legislation is detrimental to the quality of life in international society.
The attitude that justifies violence in the womb is the same attitude that justifies violence throughout the life cycle.
Inter-Religious Organisation (IRO) president, Noble Khan, said if there was any attempt to legalise abortion the IRO would oppose it.
Khan, who was also at the news conference, said: We want to ensure that life takes place and the rights of the unborn are preserved. We would like to urge the nation to take a stand against abortion.
Chaplain of the Emmanuel Community, Fr George Pritchett, said that in an abortion the most innocent member of our society is being put to death by people who did not understand what they were doing.
He said: We stand very strongly for the most basic fundamental quality of our humanity which is to protect the weak and the young. These are children we are talking about.
Emmanuel Community member, Violet D Ornellas, said that when the Emmanuel Centre was opened they immediately saw a need to provide young mothers with options.
She said: There were a lot of young girls who became pregnant and the only option offered to them was abortion. Many of them were driven out of their homes. Many cases were the results of incest or a stepfather. Their mothers rejected them. We started seeing an average of four girls a week.
The Emmanuel Community is holding its second interfaith March Against Abortion tomorrow. Participants will assemble at one of three points: Morvant Junction, the Foreshore area adjoining the Jean Pierre Complex, or the Brian Lara Promenade opposite the Financial Complex.
With the exception of the Brian Lara Promenade where participants are asked to assemble at 3 p.m., people starting the march in Morvant or on the Foreshore are to gather at 2.30 p.m.
The march will end at the Queens Park Savannah, opposite the Princess Building site.
