Secondly, Steven Earle has written other songs that to me raise questions about whether he actually likes this country ("My Uncle", for one...) and his left-leaning politics are very close to the political "values" of Johnny Lindh's parents...
So, you can defend him on the grounds that he's just writing from the "third-person" perspective all you want. Those of us who have followed his politics know better...
I know that he is against the death penalty and that he covered a song about avoiding the draft, but back then I didn't completely disagree with those that chose not to fight in an undeclared war in a foreign land.
