But there have always been customers for prostitutes - and always will be, all over the world. That's not the issue.

There's a vast difference between a prostitute (a business-woman engaged in a more or less illegal business) and a slave. Why do we suddenly have an epidemic of slavery involving mostly Israeli businessmen of Russian origin - if LarryLeid is to be believed?

My take on the whole problem is that Russia is in deep economic turmoil, and is the victim, rather than the villain in this situation.

I do not deny the existence of a Russian mob, but the American media is having a Harlequin Romance affair with them, no doubt.

The network is simply not responsible for NEAR as much as people fantasize about. The Nigerians probably match them, but receive far less fanfare.

I have no idea whether this can be proved. It's LarryLied's contention. I replied to him because he pinged me (I replied to him the way I did because of an observation someone else made on another thread; crime in Israel soared following massive immigration from Russia. That's NOT what happened when Russian Jews immigrated to the United States 100 years before). I don't even know whether there really is an epidemic of sex-slaves from Russia or anywhere else.

But I do know that communism had a strongly negative effect on East-Germans, probably compounded by the fact that Russians - with very good reason - didn't like them. I also know that the collapse of a government and society is not good for anyone.

I also know very little about Russia's internal politics. But it seems that Russia of today resembles Weimar Germany 1920-1933. Who do the Russians blame for their situation? Is there a sizeable minority which blames the West or parts of the West or the Jews?

Any of these nations which are under-privileged, but on the border of more advanced economies, will end up being exploited in this manner, unless there are strong cultural prohibitions. In the 19th century, Irish women seeking to emigrate were targetted for prostitution rackets, likewise Jewish women in Eastern Europe. Normally they were preyed on by people of their own religious/ethnic group, and certainly, being Jewish is not relevant - everyone is into it. Ronald Hyam wrote about these prostitution rackets in his book "Empire and Sexuality", which has lots of information.

As far as Israel is concerned, I think that there are several reasons why there is a significant prostitution problem. One is that Israel has a high profile in the media and gets noticed, so it is a visible problem. Another is the presence of these Russian mafia immigrants (yes, I am still after them. I know that other posters deny it, but Alouette has posted sources. In my turn, I get my information from the Arab media, whose journalists are unlikely to have imagined that they were suddenly surrounded by drug-dealing pseudo-Jews. If they say so, it is probably because it is true.) And finally, one reason is that Israel is a centre of religious pilgrimage.

That last reason might sound very odd, but I can justify it. Pilgrimage - at the popular level - is often associated with sexual license. I can't say for all religious traditions, only Catholicism and Shia Islam, but as far as those two go ... (and why would anyone else be any different?) In France, most Catholic shrine towns, in the 19th century, also had exceptionally high rates of prostitution. This is shown in the historical work of Alain Corbin, and I found the same thing myself, when researching. I would not usually mention this, as it just becomes an occasion for Catholic-bashing. The reason, simply, is that people (no matter how outwardly pious) act very differently when they are away from home. Also, some pilgrims convince themselves that their sins are forgiven by attaining the pilgrimage, so it doesn't matter what they do on the way over. Obviously, the clergy tell them different, but they don't listen.

In Islam, also, many people get the idea that as ones sins are forgiven by going on Haj, then one may as well do everything forbidden before arrival. (This attitude is condemned by the authorities, of course.) The Shia have a custom of "temporary marriage" which is especially practiced on pilgrimage. I note that the other country in the Middle East which has a high rate of organised prostitution is Bahrain - incidently a stopping off point for pilgrims between Iran and the Arab world.

Silly. Very silly. But thank you for telling me what is to be found on the lesbian child-abusers site. You seem to have gone right through it - I didn't even know they existed. I don't know any of those links you provide, many of them seem to anarchists, and therefore aethestic. Hard to link them to Islam, as you are trying to do. The only one I know is the link to the socialist journal "Counter-Punch." But while the pedophiles link to CounterPunch, I don't think that CounterPunch link to them.

To prove your case, what you need to do is, to find a recognised Palestinian or Islamic site, and show that they link to sex perverts. You will have to look up Palestine Chronicle, IslamicDigest, and IslamOnline, and Hussainia and all the rest of them. Happy hunting.

2. A large number of male foreign workers.
