[history]
Greenville County sheriff's deputies were called to the old Anderson Road area near Carolina High School to investigate what may be some of the five cylinders containing a highly poisonous gas stolen from a Greenville welding company last month.
Sgt. James McCann, Sheriff's Office spokesman, said a caller reported seeing canisters this morning and first called Anderson County Sheriff's Office, whose deputies then called Greenville.

Maybe the thieves were looking for ammonia to start up a meth lab.

Yep. It is indeed SC.

It makes one wonder whether this stuff has always happened and it only makes the news now because of 9-11, or if this sort of stuff really is happening more often.

The original thread pointed out that it could have been someone trying to start a meth lab but this was the wrong chemical for that...

Investigators said that they do not know the contents of the white metal canister, which was carefully removed at about noon.
...
The canister was labeled "hydrogen fluoride," but investigators said that they have not yet confirmed the contents.
...
Five similarly shaped canisters of hydrogen fluoride (also known as hydrofluoric acid) were stolen from a Greenville County welder's supply business last month. Those canisters were blue, investigators said.

The cylinders were stolen from National Welders Co.This type of thing happens all the time.
I used to be employed by a restaurant equipment manufacturer, and we had a National Welders distributor right on the property.
People would steal nitrous oxide from inside the fence behind the building on a regular basis.
Finally, they started putting those cylinders in the building or some other place.
BTW, I think the chemical that is being stolen for meth labs here in NC is anhydrous ammonia.

Thanks. I feel like such an idiot. I KNEW White Horse Rd was in SC.

tart a meth lab but this was the wrong chemical for that...
That would assume that the offenders weren't high on meth to start off with and could identify the product. We're not dealing with the sharpest tools in the shed here.

No Evacutions After Canisters Found Jul 15, 2002 It turns out it was not one of the highly poisonous and toxic chemicls stolen from the National Welders Company stolen on White Horse Road. Five cylinders of Anhydrous Hydrogen Flouride were stolen. From
http://www.wspa.com/features/fftues/canister.shtml This latest canister was found on Old Anderson Road in Greenville County. It was not on the stolens ones according to Haz-Mat on the scene.
No homes were evacuated.
If you see one of these blue colored and about four and a half feet tall call your local sheriff's department.

People would steal nitrous oxide from inside the fence behind the building on a regular basisWonder what they would be doing with that? Hmmmm.... I know what I would do with it. Exactly how big were these canisters CD? As for the article, can the stolen materials mentioned used for anything other than glass etching?
