The whiskey flowed more freely than anyone wanted yesterday morning when 1,500 gallons of Southern Comfort flooded a portion of the Brown-Forman Corp.'s bottling-supplies warehouse on Garland Avenue, forcing the facility's evacuation.

''There are going to be some happy rats tonight,'' said Bud Schardein, executive director of Metropolitan Sewer District, which reported no problems with the water supply downstream of the warehouse after the liquor was washed into the sewers.

This is as clear a case of alcohol abuse as I have ever heard.

Now, that's what a Southern gentleman such as myself would call a cryin' damn shame.

Southern Comfort was my first experience with alcohol, my first hangover, and my first having to get up and go to school in spite of said hangover.

I've not touched a drop of SC since. The stuff is evil.

1,500 gallons... should be a drop in the bucket for a sewer system.

''There are going to be some happy rats tonight,''

And some very hung-over rats in the morning.

Wary of the flammable liquor, rescue workers turned off all power in the warehouse and diluted the whiskey with water, ...

...and just to be extra safe, the also diluted it a second time with a little ice.

Nah.....

Back in the early 70s Wild Turkey released two collections of commemorative ceramic whisky bottles, in the shapes of different types of turkeys. One of them is a turkey with American flag banners at the base, released in 1976 to celebrate the Bicentennial.

My parents have both collections, and to this day some of them still have whisky in them. Try a shot of THAT stuff and you tell me how well you feel. :p

I got beat up in San Jose in 1971 after drinking SC. I've not touched it since either. LOL

Well, it should be nicely aged by now, anyway!

Wonder how that bottle of Ezra Brooks in the commemorative VFW decanter (circa 1973) in my liquor cabinet would taste by now? I found it on the bottom shelf pushed to the back at a liquor store in 1989, and I've had it ever since, seal still intact.

Tequila. In Mexico. In a bottle with a handmade label. Bought out of a backroom at a barbershop.

I may still be hung over. Just thinking about it gives me a pounding, vise-like headache. But it went down so smooth, especially after the second shot.

I got beat up in San Jose in 1971 after drinking SC.

For some crazy reason, I HAD to ride my bicycle about 10 miles after downing mine. It seemed the most important thing in the world to do.

Sure slept good that night though. And sure puked my guts out the next day :(

I too can only remember drinking that stuff once, I don’t know how they stay in business, must be like PT Barnum said, “there is a (thirsty) sucker born every minute”.
