Perot is not guilty . . . of not talking

WHEN Ross Perot sat down before a legislative committee last week, the Fifth Amendment never came up. Ross Perot is no Kenneth Lay.

Perot snatched 19 percent of the vote in the 1992 presidential race partly on his appeal as a straight-talking anti-politician. His ideas were confused, but his rhetoric was direct.

Perot was similarly unabashed when he appeared before the Senate Select Committee to Investigate Price Manipulation of the Wholesale Energy Market, which is trying to figure out why the electricity market went haywire in 2000.

I liked Perot. I still do. I voted for him twice, because the Republicans couldn't get their shit together. And don't tell me I helped to put Clinton in office.

It's an odd exoneration for Perot Systems: guilty only of bragging about secrets that everyone knew. But in the current corporate climate, Perot should be happy to leave it at that and head back to Texas. (ending paragragh)

Gee, it's a shame that the gov't can't find a way to put him in jail. //sarcasm OFF

You didn't help - you DID put Clinton in office.

I guess the GOP did a poor job of convincing 19% of the voting public that Bush was a better choice than Clinton. After Bush decided to break a fundemental campaign pledge and raise taxes on the producers in this country, the GOP had a tough sell to make. Voters knew that Clinton was a bad egg and Bush went and proved that he was no better. Given the choices then and now, I'd still take Perot.

Bashing Perot voters is a good way to deflect attention, but not blame. But that's okay. You don't really need my vote, do you?

You helped put Clinton in office, pure and simple.

And Clinton may have been simple, but he sure as heck wasn't pure.

And I liked Ross because he focused attention on the national debt and the "daficits", but I wouldn't have voted for him in a million years.

They all do that. Only in my case, it was my brother-in-law.
I'm glad that I don't live near him. We'd be at each others throats.

"His ideas were confused"

'Confused' is a generous description from a journalist who understands the basic problem with Perot.

The GOP didn't do a poor job convincting 19% of the voting public that Bush was a better choice than CLINTON; they failed to convince 19% of the voting public that Bush was a better choice than PEROT. Ditto the Dems, Al Gore and Ralph Nader.

I didn't need your vote; the country did. As a result of the Perot vote, we had 8 years of Clinton and we're now reaping the results.

Ah. So now Perot voters are the kind of people who let their country down by not voting for YOUR guy. FWIW, I held my nose and voted for Dole in '96 and the GOP still couldn't muster a win after four years of Clinton and a Perot vote of only 6%. Bush Jr., deserved his 2000 win, but even without the 'RAT cheating, it still would've been close.

People say that the majority of this country is conservative and I believe it. But the GOP leadership must not want its votes very much, because it does a poor job of courting it and keeping its promises to them. But that's not Perot's fault.

BTW, 'RATs are upset because Nader spoiled "their" victory by pulling votes away from Gore. Does that mean he's a good man because he was there when his country needed him? :-D

You & the other "volunteers" were duped by Perot & clinton. Perot had no real desire to be president he just wanted to make sure Bush lost. Perot & clinton teamed up to make it happen & you were duped by what you thought was Perots straight talk. It sounded good but it was all lies. On election night '92 Perot was the happiest man in the world next to clinton. If you ever get the chance to see a video of Perot dancing with his wife that night, you will see the look on his face. It was one of sheer joy for a job well done, he lost & so did Bush.
