Palestinian refugee camp in southern Lebanon under siege after deadly shooting incident

The Lebanese army was laying siege to a Palestinian refugee camp in southern Lebanon, demanding the handover of a man accused of killing three of its intelligence agents before taking refuge with a militant Palestinian group inside.

The army, which sent reinforcements into the Sidon area 40 kilometers (south of Beirut and around the camp, called on camp leaders to seek out and surrender Badih Hamade, a Lebanese Shiite.

According to AFP, Palestinian sources said Friday, that Hamade was hiding in the Ain al Helweh camp with Sheikh Abdullah Shreidi, leader of a splinter group of the fundamentalist Usbat al-Ansar, which has many supporters in the camp and is branded as "terrorist" by the United States.

The popular committees, which include the camp's political and military leaders, issued a statement Friday ordering Shreidi to "hand over the author of the crime who is hiding with him ... otherwise a joint security force will go and winkle him out." The statement did not say how long Shreidi had been given.

Hamade, also known as Abu Obeida, is accused of killing Thursday three military intelligence agents who were watching him on the road between the Ain al Helweh and Mieh-Mieh refugee camps, east of Sidon.

He is also accused of being responsible for bomb attacks on military checkpoints around Ain al Helweh in the past few months. A Palestinian source said Hamade was wounded in the shoulder in an exchange of fire Thursday.

The Palies have radicalized themselves by so many decades of Arafat, that no one can abide living with them.

I'm willing to bet that this new afront against the Palestinians will never make it in the headlines. The reason? Because it's tacitly understood in the Arab (and even the West) that it's OK for the Palestinians to be pushed around by other Arabs, but it's just plain wrong for the Jews to touch them. Reality is pretty damn strange.

Question: How was Sharon able to engineer all this shooting in Lebanon?

I know that I probably sound simple (I am somewhat new to following middle-eastern politics) but on the face of it, it seems that it is good that other countries are also troubled by Arafat's regime. I am especially happy that they seem to be doing something about it.

Frankly, it is really not relevant to me what the UN and the US press think. Thank you (knighthawk?) for posting the article. I guess anyone who wants to be informed about what's going on over there can be - and those that don't care will probably never know, or care.

I would appreciate it. Actually, I don't have the slightest idea what a ping list is, but I have read several articles you have posted with interest.

Thank you for your information.

Muslims killing Muslims......who cares?...let's move on.... The UN and Koffi Annan say it's a non-event.

Muslims have been killing thousands of Muslims a year in the MidEast and everyone yawns. People care only when Israeli Jews are involved. Algeria has 50,000 killed in the past decade in inter communal warfare fired up by Muslim fundamentalists.

Where are the calls of the Sidon Massacre?!?!? Where is the condemnation of the UN and various limp-wristed countries around the world? Where is Amnesty International ringing their hands at the "inhumanity" of the seige?!?!?

Nothing in this world I hate more then hypocrites and this world is filled to the brim with em.

Pretty soon the Belgians will arrive.

Not to prosecute, just to trade some french fries for hummus.
