I believe some of the alternative methods of exchange, encryption, and the low cost of powerful computer tools has made the returns on "off the books" business greater than the risk. Furthermore, virtual communities are creating an untaxable barter economy for those who understand what the Information Age is truly about.

Yes, you are likely right on this, and it would certainly explain why the economy is so robust and the market so down, at least in part. But I think we still need "more speed" on the net and a final solution on "intellectual property" issues re: NAPSTER to get over the next hump.

you're too late, the government already has tax laws from 20 years ago to tax your barters. Your are suppposed to report the value of these on form 1099!
