In many ways, it's akin to the way the Beats and the Free Love sorts encouraged America to get its "Spade Kicks" by emulating the Jungle Love they could find at the Cotton Club uptown (or, back to the "better late than never Flyover Country" ... Elvis and his pelvis). Not only was this a terrible dehumanization and marginalization of the black who (according to the Moynihan report) already had enough problems thanks to historical and social circumstances beyond his control that didn't need compounding with some backhanded glorification of the base, it worked like a solvent on the moral integrity of the population at large who tried to emulate their anti-heroes.
