New York Post Page Six...

FRANK Serpico's leftist got him booed off the stage at Chatham's tony MacHayden Theater on July 4th.locutions The whistle-blowing former detective had been invited to read from the Declaration of Independence on the opening night of "1776." Instead, he ranted against "the elected, or not-elected, leaders of today's United States," drawing hisses and boos, reports Post State Editor Fredric U. Dicker. Serpico went on to rant that capitalism leads to terrorism. That prompted some theatergoers to shout, "Just read already!" - and others to walk out.

WE HEAR . . .

THAT the New York Observer is wooing testosterone-enhanced former New York Times magazine columnist Andrew Sullivan . . . THAT Miss World Natasha Allas is fuming at Continental Airlines for losing her luggage on a flight from Los Angeles to Washington. The beauty's bags were packed with $10,000 worth of dresses that her boyfriend, Cray Computers majority shareholder Terren Peizer, bought her . . . THAT Shaquille O'Neal, who wants to be a sheriff when his NBA career ends, was riding shotgun in a police cruiser that responded to a crime in progress. Shaq chased the perp and knocked him to the ground, where he looked up in disbelief at the 7-foot, 360-pound Lakers center.

HAPPENIN' HAMPTONS

By Neal Travis

THE Bentley Hotel in Southampton will be playing on its name over the Fourth of July holiday with two top-of-the line Bentleys on hand to drive guests over to the very cool Almond restaurant at Bridgehampton.
Meanwhile, all-in-white country superstar Faith Hill was dining at 95 School Street the other night causing another guest to joke that she didn't need a Bentley to get there - she rode up on her horse.

This weekend there's lots of Hamptons action, including a big Phoenix House benefit in Sagaponack tomorrow night where Ann Jones and Mark Ronson are going to perform the first ever mother-and-son deejay gig. Sunday night's highlight is the preview screening of "Men in Black II " hosted by director Barry Sonnenfeld and Steven Spielberg at the UA in East Hampton, followed by supper at Nick and Toni's.

THE GIULIANI CHRONICLES

WHERE you and I see romance, a divorce lawyer sees a $500-an-hour prospective client. Take palimony pioneer Marvin Mitchelson, who was at his usual perch in Nirvana restaurant the other night shaking his head over Rudy Giuliani's very public professions of love for Judi Nathan, and his gratitude to her for the way she got him through a terrible two years. Marvin wishes the couple every happiness, but notes that if things go wrong and they never marry, Judi will have a very clear legal claim on some of Rudy's burgeoning assets under palimony precedents. But I'm sure this is just lawyer talk - Rudy and Judi seem like the best things that ever happened to one another.

MORE LIZ

THE BEAUTIFUL Marla Prather, who gave up a burgeoning art museum career in Washington to marry publisher Mort Zuckerman in 1996, has adjusted brilliantly to their divorce. She and Mort remain super-friendly and do their damnedest to make their daughter, Abigail, happy. Now Marla is getting ready to marry lawyer Jonathan Schiller, the partner of David Boies of Gore and Microsoft fame. She has a new house at Three Mile Harbor in the Hamptons, a New York town house and a fine job as curator of the Whitney Museum in NYC. After their wedding in October, Marla and Jonathan will lead a three-tiered life between Washington, Manhattan and the Hamptons.

IT'S BAD NEWS for The Washington Post's columnist Richard Cohen and his well-liked art dealer wife, Leslie Feely. They split about six weeks ago. They are two terrific people, and most everyone wishes them well.

I'll stay on my wonderful deck overlooking the mountains enjoying a glass of wine with my loving husband and thanking God all the while I am not a part of that "party" crowd. They are all unhappy and searching for something. Well, I say they should search for their REAL selves and maybe then they could find peace and true happiness instead of all this phony stuff they do to try and "fit in." It's sick for sure. Better them than me though.
