3 shot after residents surprise alleged burglars

Three people were shot early today in east Harris County when some apartment tenants arrived home and interrupted a burglary in progress, sheriff's officials said.

None of the victims died, but two of them were seriously wounded, detectives said.

The shooting happened around 2:45 a.m. in the 300 block of Audrey Lane near Woodforest when two men returned to their apartment and surprised three burglars inside the residence. The confrontation then escalated into gunfire, Harris County Sheriff's Detective Craig Thomas said.

One of the burglars was shot in the head and collapsed inside the apartment, Thomas said. The other two burglars fled before deputies arrived.

The 26-year-old burglar who was shot was taken by LifeFlight helicopter to Memorial Hermann Hospital, where he was in critical condition later today, Thomas said.

The two men who live at the apartment and surprised the burglars also were shot, Thomas said. They were taken by another person to a hospital before an ambulance could be summoned. One of the men was shot in the chest and was in fair condition at Memorial Hermann Hospital. The other man suffered a superficial wound and was taken to East Houston Regional Medical Center, where he was treated and released, Thomas said.

Detectives could not immediately say who fired the shots and were still investigating later today. Detectives said they did not know why the burglars targeted that apartment.

Another good use firearms. It looks like they need to go to the range and practice though since all the perps survived.

It says that two of the "victims" were seriously injured; however, one of the apartment's occupants was only superficially injured and released. Surely this was a misprint.

While the article doesn't say so, it appears that everyone involved was armed. My first suspicion would be that the burglary victims were probably involved in drug dealing and were being robbed by a competing dealer.

Why do you automatically assume that only criminals have guns?

I'm a big defender of second amendment rights but why is it imperative that one must kill a burglar?

Because it's Texas; we shoot thieves, robbers, rapists and murderers here if we get the chance. If they get into the court system it's a crapshoot to get justice.

Since it sounds like you have never had a type of confrontation such as this, let me clue in.

In the heat of combat, and that's what it is, combat, you don't have time to think about "immobilizing' the burglar, you have time to decide if you live or die, or be seriously injured. Real life is NOT like the movies.

No, you read that right. In liberal-speak, anyone injured by a firearm (whether he deserved it or not) is a "victim."

Why? So he could get a contingency-fee lawyer and sue you for everything you have?

The quickest, easiest way to immobilize an armed burglar with the least danger to oneself is to shoot him dead. Any other method risks the burglar shooting the burgled one dead.

Sorry for any offense. I missed the fact that this event occurred in Texas. My suspicion was based on the fact that, in most areas of the country, it would be highly unusual for people returning to their home to be armed. Concealed carry is next to impossible to do legally in most states.

Concealed carry is a possibility in 42 states. "Shall-issue" concealed carry is available in 32 states. It certainly is possible to carry concealed legally in most states.
