Whatever for? To see whether the prospective physician's handwriting is bad enough? ;-)

But the writing sample doesn't have a number grade. It's a non-numerical letter grade from J through T that is not included in the total test score. Maybe they've changed things and given a number to the writing sample since 1998. But it would be foolish to hold subjective two-half hour writing essays to any of the three other parts, which are around 100 minutes each.
