CHILD SAFETY TOPS AGENDA FOR NEW MEXICO GUN RIGHTS GROUP
Group will focus on measures to reduce gun violence among children
ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico, July 2 The New Mexico Gun Owners Forum unveiled today the groups legislative agenda for the 2003 legislative session. Included at the top of the list are several measures designed to reduce the number of gun related injuries and deaths among children.
Data shows that children are vulnerable when it comes to accidental injury or death with firearms, said David Ware, Founder of the Forum. Our top priority is to reduce those numbers significantly through programs and legislation that work.
Citing failed attempts to reduce the number of firearms related injuries and death by anti-gun groups such as Handgun Control, Inc., NMGOF promised to endorse legislation backed by proven historical success and countless youth organizations to stem the problem.
NMGOF is currently seeking State Legislators that will introduce legislation that will include firearms safety education, such as the NRAs Eddie Eagle program, in public schools. The program will be based largely on the successes of other programs such as D.A.R.E. (Drug and Alcohol Resistance Education) and various teen abstinence programs.
Programs such as D.A.R.E. and those designed to reduce teen pregnancy have been extremely successful in reaching their goals. We believe that we can build on those successes in the area of firearms safety. Ware said.
The group will also attempt to secure State funding for the purchase & distribution of trigger locks to families with firearms in the home.
For decades, anti-gun groups have been successful at banning guns in various cities, and placing heavy restrictions on the sale and use of firearms in every state. But the fact is, children are still being seriously injured. Ware said. Its time to stop focusing on anti-gun legislation, and promoting pro-child safety laws.
The New Mexico Gun Owners Forum is an Internet-based, grassroots organization with over 800 members statewide.
