Security screeners at the San Jose airport Sunday night became so distracted while testing a suspicious carry-on bag for explosives residue that they never noticed whether the passenger was male or female -- or that the passenger had picked up the bag and left -- until it was too late.

They have spent billions to overhaul the airport security system since 9-11, but, in the name of political correctness, have ignored the fundamental problem- the employees. Many airport security officers in the major cities, such as San Francisco, Washington D.C., and New York, are non-US citizens, speak little English, lack the intelligent to make critical decisions and are way below the height which should be required for such a position.
Federalizing the present inept airport security personal was nothing more than putting a Band-Aid on the problem.

Also note that the SJ airport has been renamed - Mineta SJ International Airport. Very appropriate, I would say.
