Blowin' Smoke (the mindset of liberals)
Ithaca ISIS ^ | 6/29/02 | by Jessariah

Posted on 07/02/2002 4:52:35 AM PDT by Behind Liberal Lines

In the famous Hippie anthem, "Blowin' In The Wind," Bob Dylan asks a lot of "How many's..." Of course, the questions in the song are abstract and metaphorical, and are intended to make one reach deep within themselves to face a profound truth.

"How many times must a man look up before he can see the sky? Yes, 'n' how many ears must one man have before he can hear people cry?"

You get the idea.

After nearly 40 years of soul-searching, our soon-to-be geriatric set of overly-enlightened, self-appointed social/moral guardians have deciphered what has been blowin' in the wind all these years.

The problem, quite simply, is anyone who isn't like them.

Of course, that may be a little vague. Perhaps I should clarify. You are both NOT LIKE THEM and PART OF THE PROBLEM if you:

Believe in personal responsibility (including providing for yourself and your family whenever possible and accounting for your own actions).

Believe that America is not the problem, but the solution (we're not perfect by any means, but I don't see a whole lot of people -- who claim places like France and Cuba are better -- lining up to move there).

Actually say the pledge of allegiance whenever appropriate (and mean it).

Think that criminals should be punished for their actions (and should not end up with more rights than their victims).

Have unwavering convictions (rather than the which-way-is-the-wind-blowing wishy-washiness that plagues "moderates").

Present possible solutions that could actually work in a real-world model (as opposed to rhetorical nonsense that contradicts itself and could never, ever be implemented, much less succeed).

Hold yourself to the same high moral standards that you demand of others.

Yes, it's much easier to point out all the problems so easily when things like facts and reality don't play any part in the equation. And when you throw in the fact that progressive liberalism is nothing less than walking, breathing hypocrisy dressed in Socialistic garb, you realize that there's more than answers blowin' in the wind -- there's a lot of smoke as well.

Which brings us full-circle. Now, a full generation later, there is a new anthem with new questions. And those who are, indeed, "part of the problem" will probably find these new stanzas just as cryptic and mystifying as Dylan's.

Here's what I've come up with so far...

How many people who opposed lake-source cooling have said nothing about the arsenic-soaked pressure-treated wood at the Farmer's Market inlet location?

How many people who think we should be paying more taxes actually send the IRS extra money each year?

How many pro-union left-wing activists drive Swedish cars and shop at Wegmans?

How many people have gone online or to a retail store and purchased Michael Moore's book on the evils of Capitalism?

How many vegans wear leather belts and shoes?

How many people who demonize the wealth of Republicans actually live in expensive homes and drive expensive cars themselves?

How many people who complain about "sprawl" also complain about the congested traffic downtown?

How many people who are "offended" by the smell of second-hand smoke choose to bath infrequently, burn incense constantly and never use deodorant?

How many "conscientious objectors" who intentionally choose not to pay taxes make direct use of state and federal grants?

How many people who claim there is nothing wrong with public schools have their children enrolled in private schools?

How many people who oppose profiling will immediately call you names and assume the worst of you just because you profess to be conservative?

ISIS bump.

BTW, you can't force people to think, hence, liberals.

Probably a good idea to fill in non-NY'ers about what Wegman's is - it's a local supermarket chain, known for two things. One, its resistance in the past to unionizing its workforce. And two, the fact that it's consistently listed as one of Fortune Magazine's 100 best places to work in America.

I always wondered how the lefties made sense of that - no union, but still a good place to work. If they really thought hard about it, you might get to see them blow a fuse ;)

I wish we had Wegmans down here in NC. Our grocery stores suck in comparrison. Kroger, Harris Teeter, Food Lion, Piggly Wiggly, Lowes. They all suck and have little variety of merchandise.

And god forbid you try to find quality produce at any of them. And surrounded by farms you would think we would have great produce.

What I would give to have Topps or Wegmans down here.

Sorry Southerners, but this yankee does want to change something down here. And that is our grocery stores. Other than that I have little to no complaints.

Our relatives from the South come up and ask to go to Wegman's.

I'll think of you next time I'm there. I've been to Piggly-Wiggly and Food Lion, so I sympathize...

There's always hope for the future, though - they've been slowly expanding their territory over the last few years, with a couple of stores in NJ now. Give 'em a decade or two, and maybe they'll work their way all the way down the East Coast to you... ;)

Believe it or not, there are Ithacites who refuse to shop in Wegmans because its non-union. But not many. And a lot of those who do shop at the equally corporate Tops instead.

Why would such a thing surprise us?

Is their favorite little organic grocery store unionized? Or do they give them a pass because they are organic and 'doing the right thing' for the environment?

Nice to see that there is still some intelligent, intellectually honest life still present in Ithaca. There is hope.

Of course, the "enlightened" (and, possibly, a FR lurker) don't see it that way. Here's an email that was sent to the ISIS "editorial staff":

Well, well, well...."isis" emerges in the New Republic as the fascist underground in ithaca -- published by one or more local goosesteppers who lack the balls to identify themselves. Don't you know that capitalism (an anti-human economic/political system that breeds imperialism) = evil? Nonetheless, thanx for the great press. The New Republic's promo should draw even more radicals to the home front.
I think the reference to "New Republic" is actually intended to mean "FR" but I'm not sure.

The level of intelligence of anyone who confuses FR and TNR is a clear indicator as to why they are a liberal.

This is exactly what Ann Coulter was writing about in her new book. And your example couldn't have better made the point: when libs can't or won't argue on merit, they engage in ad hominems and demagogery.

Isn't this interesting? Seems as though I recall undergound papers in the 60's and 70's as a means for them to fight the establishment! Would not turn about be fair play? According to them, the establishment, no it is not!

In their mind we (Conservatives) have no rights, the elite own them all, they have become what they fought so bitterly against. They are the establishment! At least here in the City of Evil. Fight on underground warriors! We will come to the top once again.

Which one of you is Hank Hill who writes to this publication? If not, another Ithaca FReeper is. I followed the source link to find a story about the "Bush is a Nazi" graffiti. It contained this little tidbit...

My first thought was, this being Ithaca, " Are we supposed to call the Ithaca police to report evidence about the graffiti and vandalism, or evidence that Bush is a Nazi?"

That is taken directly from this thread and was a post by RonF, #16.

My screen name here accurately reflects my real name. If someone else used the line, either they figured it out on their own or I've been ripped off.

I suspect that Hank Hill isnt the writers real name. And BLL has told me that most of the names in the publication are fake for fear of being 'outed'.
