Festival Celebrates Life In 'Armpit Of America'
Magazine Gives Town Dubious Distinction

POSTED: 3:37 p.m. EDT July 1, 2002

BATTLE MOUNTAIN, Nev. -- They live in the armpit of America and they're proud of it. Folks in Battle Mountain, Nev., are holding their "Festival in the Pit."

It's the town's response to being dubbed the armpit of America in an article in The Washington Post Magazine. Instead of an old-fashion egg toss, organizers are staging a deodorant toss as part of the festivities.

Shar Peterson, from the local Chamber of Commerce, says Battle Mountain is trying to get a bit of mileage from the town's brush with fame. They've even purchased a billboard on on Interstate 80 encouraging motorists to make a pit stop in Battle Mountain.

The Festival in the Pit concludes next weekend.

I would've thought Cleveland was the Armpit of America.

Maybe it's just the Anus. <|:)~

You all have it wrong, the ARm Pit of America is the the swamp known as Washington DC.

The addtional of Air Conditioning has only masked the problem.

America has two arms, thus, two armpits.

Didn't the comedian Steve Martin start all this with his announcement on the Tonight show many years ago that Terre Haute, Indiana was the "armpit of America?" If so it still qualifies. Famous for it's various offensive odors. Which odor depends on the prevailing wind direction.

Terre Haute, Indiana

For some odd reason that city holds a special place in my heart. After reading 'The Stand' and finding out trashcan man was from there (all fictional of course, but I think King picked Terre Haute purposely) I wanted to see it.

My first trip across the US I was all alone, and had never been any further west then Indianapolis. My first stop from Columbus was Terre Haute, at a gas station with an Arbys. Tornado sirens started going off and the rain picked up. I ran to my car and hit the freeway, determined not to stop until I reached Amarillo, Texas (Home of the Big Texan, free 72oz steak if eaten in an hour BigTexan.com) I did not get to spend anytime in Terre Haute - in retrospect, probably a good thing!
