I am 6'4" tall and there is no way you are going to get me to waste good money on a little peanut shell like that.

I'd be the first one to defend your right not drive one of those things. As I previously stated, I want to see incentives so that many more people choose smaller cars. In Germany, regular unleaded is currently around $4.30 a gallon. That's a big incentive to drive more fuel efficient cars. Some people there still choose to drive big SUVs and big Mercedes sedans, but many more choose smaller cars. I wouldn't mind much heftier gas taxes (not quite as hefty as Germany though!), but ONLY if there were a corresponding cut in other taxes.

BTW, you'd be surpised at how far the small cars have come in the ergonomics department. I recently read a review of the new Mini Cooper; the reviewer was 6'3" tall and he said he had plenty of leg and head room. I believe that Americans have become somewhat spoiled by large vehicles. In Europe, the Ford Focus is a mid-sized car. We don't even produce anything here that resembles what they would call an economy car. I rented a car at the Frankfurt Airport last month that would make a Geo Metro look like a big car. Guess what? It was comfortable, fast, and handled great (although I'm sure glad nobody had to sit in the back).

Fuel efficiency is one of the few topics in which you will ever see me favorably compare Europe to America. Pedestrian friendly cities is another.

That price probably consists of very high taxes and does not reflect the true cost of production and delivery. Since that is the case, do you want people to be taxed excessively if they drive SUVs?
