Cresson Kearney used to live near me when I was a reporter for a newspaper in Colorado. I actually interviewed him about this book, and he gave me an autographed copy. He was a fascinating man, and thoroughly rejected the notion that nuclear war was unsurvivable.

Unfortunately, my copy of his book was destroyed when a water leak inundated my basement.

Rule #1: Dig a grave and kiss your ass goodbye.

This stuff is 1950's grade BS.

Yes, this is an excellent reference book. Even though the Cold war is over, everybody should have a copy....

There will be a lot less fallout and blast effects now than there would have been at the height of the Cold War. Fewer weapons, and smaller, more effective delivery systems. It will take very few detonations to ruin any country for a long time, although most will survive. How well they do depends on how well they are prepared to do without the distribution network. It would help tremendously if everyone just has a few cans of Spam and bags of noodles.

I don't know. You can usually learn a little something from just about anything or anybody. There's some useful info to be gleaned in there. Interesting field expedient shelters and that homemade piston pump (for air) looked like a fun project- could also be used as a McGyver device in the right situation.

Sometimes what I find useful about these sites even if their info is out of date is it helps to put you in the frame of mind to plan out your own survival in modern times in case of a catastrophic event.
