Planes Collide In Mid-Air

Around 100 people are feared dead after two large aircraft collided in mid-air over southern Germany.

A passenger airliner and a cargo plane hit the ground close to Lake Constance on the German-Swiss border.

Police said 95 people on board a Tupelov 154 and two people on a Boeing 757 cargo plane were feared killed.

The wreckage of the planes is spread over a 25-mile radius and buildings in the area are in flames.

Balls of fire

Eyewitnesses reported seeing two large balls of fire in the sky and bodies in the street.

The Russian-made Tupolev was travelling from Moscow to Barcelona when the collision happened at around 35,000 feet.

The Boeing cargo plane, owned by DHL, was en route from Italy to Brussels.

The aircraft hit the ground on a road near the city of Sigmariegen, according to a spokesman for the Baden-Wuerttemberg state government.

Debris

RTL journalist Uwe Gerhard told Sky News that debris of the planes was spread over a wide area: "There are reports of burning wrecks in the sky and a great explosion."

Eyewitness Alfred Knoedler said police radio reported there were bodies lying everywhere on the ground.

"I saw a flash of light so enormous that it lit up everything," Mr Knoedler said.

The airspace in which the planes collided is monitored by Swiss air controllers. A spokesman said it was not yet known whether the crash was due to pilot error or a mistake by air traffic control.
