SKOPJE, July 1 (AFP) - A group of unknown attackers on Monday opened automatic fire at a multiethnic police patrol in a former stronghold of ethnic Albanian rebels in Macedonia, causing no casualties, a police official said.
The patrol, composed of Macedonians and ethnic Albanians, was attacked early Monday in Rudnicka kolonija, a settlement in the north between the villages of Lojane and Vaksince, Vojislav Zafirovski told AFP.
The police returned fire, he added.
The region of northern Macedonia was a scene of last year's fierce clashes between the government forces and ethnic Albanian rebels of the National Liberation Army (NLA).
According to a peace agreement signed last August, the NLA was disbanded and most of the territory it had controlled was returned under the control of Skopje. Multiethnic police patrol in most of the territory.
