VPC Launches New Web Site, www.banhandgunsnow.org, in Conjunction With Release of Paperback Edition of Latest Book, Every Handgun Is Aimed at You: The Case for Banning Handguns
WASHINGTON, DCIn conjunction with release of the paperback edition of its most recent book, Every Handgun is Aimed at You: The Case for Banning Handguns (The New Press, 2001), the Violence Policy Center (VPC) today launched a new citizen-action web site, www.banhandgunsnow.org. Each year handguns claim more than 20,000 American lives in suicides, homicides, and unintentional shootings. The unique qualities that make handguns ideally suited for violent death and injuryconcealability coupled with lethalityare illustrated daily in American homes and as far away as the Paris suburbs, where yesterday eight were killed and 19 wounded by a French citizen wielding a legally possessed handgun. Josh Sugarmann, VPC executive director and author of the book, states, "The single bloody thread that runs through our nation's gun death and injury crisis is the easy accessibility we allow our citizens to the most lethal categories of firearms, with handguns at the top of the list. After each horrific shooting a predictable pattern emerges, we quickly look for a loophole to be plugged, a limited law that could be better enforced, or other `common sense' solutions, while never stepping back to look at the big picture: the free flow of gunsand in particular handgunsin our nation. America's gun violence problem will not be solved by licensing and registration, trigger locks, or lamentations over the evil in men's hearts. Tragic shootings are America's future until we eliminate handguns, the tools that make such violence possible."
The new VPC web sitewhich contains studies, analyses, survey data, and useful linkswill be updated continuously. Banhandgunsnow.org is launched with the recognition that more than 30 percent of the American public supports a ban on handguns, with this number rising to as high as 50 percent in the wake of horrific shootings like 1999's Columbine massacre. Adds Sugarmann, "Our goal is simple: to engage and activate dedicated gun control supporters. Banhandgunsnow.org will give voice to gun control advocates who have grown weary of limited half-measures that may offend few, but fail to accomplish much."
Every Handgun is Aimed at You: The Case For Banning Handguns covers a wide range of issues in 10 chapters, including: An Introduction to Handguns; The History of Handguns; Handguns and Suicide; Handguns and Self-Defense; Handguns and Crime; Handguns and Women; Handguns and Youth; Handguns and Minorities; Handguns in Public; and, The Case for Banning Handguns. The book is available at bookstores nationwide.

Given the title, I assume I really didn't need the cautionary "volcanic hurl alert".
Sorry if this nauseating pile of festering offal has already been posted. I saw it mentioned on TheFiringLine.com and didn't find it here on a search, so I thought it might be of some interest, if for nothing else as a handy way of inducing vomiting if poison is ingested by someone in your household.

I would have to agree to ban hand gun snow. I don't like rusty firearms.

I would have to agree to ban hand gun snow. I always soak my handguns in a soloution of Selsun Blue after a day at the range. It keeps this sort of embarrassment to a minimum.
To: TroutStalker
Of course, I don't think they would include in the ban handguns of the police and the military. Those handguns presumably are not "aimed at everyone."

Try to e-mail VPC and you get:"Our online form is temporarily unavailable. Please check back soon - we are eager to hear from you." EAGER?? Not from the EAGER FREEPERS!

This goof is out of touch with the times. These days very few RATS are willing to take on guns in election campaigns or in Congress. When these saps can't get the liberal RATS to carry water for them they are in trouble.
Americans are more pro-2nd Amendment than ever since our nation was assaulted on 9-11-2001.

The release and hawking of this clunker now is strangely out of sinc with the times, and reality. All the arguments that they make are old ones, and have either been generally discredited by experience and fact, or do not actually support their ultimate agenda of trashing the Constitution, and disarming all law abiding Americans. Remember, the rationale for the Assault weapons ban is already part of the PC culture, and so what would these neo-totalitarians leave us to defend ourselves with? Perhaps shotguns with bird shot, single shot 22 caliber rifles, maybe slingshots? Certainly not anything that would actually do the job.
The fact remains that none of what VPC touts as logic has panned out. Conceal Carry laws have reduced murder and assault rates. Handgun confiscation in England and Australia have increased murder, home invasion, and armed street crime. I guess they are content to preach to the gun control choir. They have less of a chance now of achieving their unconstitutional goals now than they have had in years past. We can only hope that that trend continues, or else.

This goof is out of touch with the times Sugarmann has never been very tightly wrapped on this issue. He's a through-and-through zealot, and no reason will ever penetrate the nest of shadows, snakes, and inner demons haunting his psyche. Unfortunately, we have to deal with the twit because he's very vocal and has the VPC at his disposal to dissemintate his pet psychosis to the rest of the sheeple (unfortunately, a LOT of them post-9-11 are very receptive to the Safety at the expense of Liberty argument, at least if some of the surveys are to be believed).

Seriously, isn't this a change in tone for these morons?
What happened to reasonable restrictions, licenses, closing the Gun Snow loophole, etc?
They must be getting very paniced to actually be stating their real goals and objectives.
I wonder how much of the chapter on 'history of handguns' is based on Bellisles book?

. . . we quickly look for a loophole to be plugged, a limited law that could be better enforced, or other `common sense' solutions, while never stepping back to look at the big picture: the free flow of guns . . . Makes me laugh. He is doing EXACTLY what he says will not work (looking for "loopholes" to plug) and he thinks the "big picture" is the free flow of guns when we all know the big picture is twofold: 1) slapping criminals on the wrist instead of hanging them and, 2) the absolute, unconditional, freedom-ensuring, natural right of the people to keep and bear arms.

I wonder how much of the chapter on 'history of handguns' is based on Bellisles book? Ha, I've answered my own question...
From the AMAZON.com review:
Editorial Reviews
From Publishers Weekly
The book begins with a brief historical survey that argues (interestingly supporting Michael Bellesiles's argument in Arming America) that handguns did not become widespread in the U.S. until the Civil War, when the introduction of the Colt pistol and westward expansion fueled gun sales and deaths.

Anyone think I need to do a new improved "Helping Criminals Inc" chart of states to "visit"/avoid? Unfortunately, JR's posting code doesn't allow span/style tags, so I can't do the nice overlay stuff I've sometimes done in the past, but the concept is probably still a good one.

Finally, they've come out of the closet and openly admitted their true agenda. Well almost, they only admit to wanting to ban private ownership of handguns, but they don't intend to stop there, and they won't.

You don't really think that Sarah Brady would want her baby boy to give back the gift she gave him, do you? That nice new sniper, err, hunting rifle with scope she bought him for Christmas.
