A deadly accident on Interstate 35 Saturday morning in Lytle, 30 miles South of San Antonio. 5 people are dead, 6 are hospitalized in two separate car accidents just hours apart.
At about 3 a.m. Saturday Police received a report of a driver on the wrong side of the road on Interstate 35. Soon after, the driver, 40 year-old Albert Powers hit a pickup head-on. Both vehicles burst into flames on impact. Powers, 30 year-old Abel Hernandez and one year old Maria died at the scene. 25 year-old Benjamin Hernandez and 6 year-old Elizabeth Hernandez are recovering at University Hospital.
Crews cleaning up the scene closed down the Interstate, but before they could finish, there was another accident just one half mile up the road.
A van with a family from Irving rear ended an 18 wheeler who was stopped trying to get off the roadway for the detour from the first accident. Two people, Rocha Cordero and his 4 year-old daughter Gabriella were killed instantly. Cordero's wife 31 year-old Maria and their children 5 year-old Elizabeth, 9 year-old Julian and 11 year-old Francis are at University Hospital.
Investigators are still trying to determine why Albert Powers was driving the wrong direction on the Interstate.
