The Lebanon-based Hezbollah organization, one of the world's most formidable terrorist groups, is increasingly teaming up with al Qaeda on logistics and training for terrorist operations, according to U.S. and European intelligence officials and terrorism experts.

The new cooperation is ad hoc and tactical and involves mid- and low-level operatives. It mutes years of rivalry between Hezbollah, which draws its support primarily from Shiite Muslims, and al Qaeda, which is predominantly Sunni. It includes coordination on explosives and tactics training, money laundering, weapons smuggling and acquiring forged documents, according to knowledgeable sources.

There is nothing new in anti-Western terrorist groups working together. This was going on way back in the late '70s.

Terrorists of the 21st century are just keeping up long-standing traditions. Traditions initiated by the likes of the PLO (Palestinian Arabs), Abu Nidal (aka, Black September), Khadafi (Libya), the Red Brigade (Germany), the Black Panthers (USA) and the IRA (Ireland).

Don't overestimate them. They put their pants on one leg at a time. They are not even that good at what they do. The only reason they pulled off what they did Sep. 11th is that no one dreamed it could happen. Even at that, the passengers on the fourth plane stopped their captors from carrying out their plans.

I suspect that we have a pretty good read on these organizations now. We know when they are planning to mount something across oceans. That takes planning, time, money, and communications. A breakdown on any of those, and the plan falls through. We are not giving them time to rest and regroup.

Further, if we had credible evidence that Hezbollah was planning an attack on the United States, do you really think we would wait until they are on our soil? Really? Or do you think we would go over there and clean them out, preemptively?

That is rather a flippant answer. Lets talk about this for a moment. There is no way that our government will kick out all of the Muslims. The Muslims will hide the terrorists. Just what will we do to root out the terrorists? Will our Homeland Security get stronger with gestapo powers? How will our nation be changed with this type of war?

I don't overestimate them. They really don't have to commit many minor acts of terror in the US to achieve their ends. What effect will acts of terrorism, ala Pali/Israeli acts of terror, have on the social and political life of the US? Just what would be the effects of a real campaign of terror attacks in the US? How many new laws would be passed for our "safety?" Many people in the US would accept draconian laws for perceived safety. If they do manage to use WMD in the US, the effects would be much greater.

I don't know how good our intelligence system is on preventing attacks. I doubt they are effective in preventing attacks. They may pick up heavier message traffic and know generally that something may or may not happen, but preventing attacks? I doubt it.

Sorry to tell you, but they are already here. Hezbollah and other terror organizations have cells in the US. If you want to do some cleaning out, you don't have to go over there.
