Fischer Says Enforcement of Sharia in Afghanistan Unacceptable
Tehran Times ^ | June 29 2002

TEHRAN - German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer has said that the enforcement of Islamic law, or the Sharia, is not acceptable in Afghanistan, according to some reports from Berlin.

Speaking at the Bundestag, or German Parliament, on Friday night, the German foreign minister claimed that Islamic law disregards human rights, and that it is not in line with the principles accepted by Germany. Thus, he said, Germany cannot agree to the return of Islamic law in Afghanistan.

Fischer said the enforcement of Islamic law in Afghanistan is unacceptable despite the fact that the Loya Jirga delegates, during their recent seven-day gathering, called for the enforcement of Islamic law in their country and designated the transitional government as the Islamic Transitional Government of Afghanistan! Thus, political analysts believe that the German foreign minister's remarks are a clear instance of interference in Afghanistan's internal affairs and contradict the German government's claims of respecting democratic values as well as other nations' independence and national sovereignty.

While I agree that Sharia is unacceptable, has Germany done anything in Afghanistan?

I do recall German crews on the AWACS used to free up US AWACS from domestic protection for use in the Middle East. And there was that nice gesture by the German naval crew towards an American crew. But have they done anything else outside the police realm?

Maybe kick out all the Afghan refugees who want to establish the sharia in Germany itself.

While Afghanistan has forfeited the right to make that decision by sheltering Osama & Co, the decision has been transferred to the US, not to Germany.

It's up to the people of Afghanistan. If they want Shiria law, that's their choice. We don't have to like it, we don't have to live there. They know their people and what works as a deterrant better than we do. We just have to hope that they set up a good court system (uncorruptable) so when the law is enforced, it's fair.

Whether it is their business or not, sometimes it is just a good idea for industrialized nations to speak the truth. That type of life is a horrible way of life. Germany has had to deal with their share of this and as a civilized society - they have as much right as anyone to say it is an unacceptable way to force people to live.

The problem with this lies in the very nature of that oxymoron known as "Sharia Law"... As a system of law, it is little more than legally codified religious and gender bigotry, and therefore isn't "fair" on it's face, and never can be...

Not anymore. They gave us just cause to root out the government that sheltered Osama & Co; that transfers the decision to us.
