Blast Injures Man at Greek Port

PIRAEUS, Greece (Reuters) - A bomb blast at Greece's busiest tourist port injured one man Saturday in what police suspected was the work of urban guerillas.

They said it was likely the man was carrying an explosive device, which blew up at the ticket office of the Hellas Flying Dolphins shipping company at the port of Piraeus, near Athens.

Police said the attack bore the hallmarks of urban guerrillas but they did not identify any particular group. There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

Leftist guerrilla groups have operated in Greece, including the November 17 group which has killed 23 Greeks and foreigners since emerging in 1975. None of its members has ever been arrested. Several self-styled anarchist groups also regularly launch small fire-bomb attacks in the Greek capital.

Police later discovered a second explosive device at the site of the blast along with a gun and a hand grenade.

The area was cordoned off and authorities conducted a controlled explosion of the second device.

Witnesses said the injured man, who was rushed to hospital, had suffered arm and chest injuries. Police did not immediately name him.

"I saw him covered in blood, his one hand was missing at the wrist," one witness told Greek television.

A port official said the incident was not expected to disrupt ferry traffic.

"We don't expect any changes or reductions to scheduled routes. This is the peak season, remember," he said.

The attack came at the start of the summer tourist season, when many tourists pass through Piraeus on their way to the Greek islands.

This is just great. My daughter is flying to Greece tomorrow for a month of field work at an archeology site, then a five day Greek islands cruise. I did not see this port on her itinerary but I'll double up on the prayers.

As an infamous 20th century dictator once opined: "WHO REMEMBERS THE DEAD ARMENIANS???"

Well, Turkey sure HATES to remember THEM....'CAUSE THEY MURDERED 'EM!! AND THE Turks SURE HATE FOR anybody TO MENTION THEIR AGGRESSION AND LAND GRAB, AGAINST THE GREEK CYPRIOTS IN 1972!!

Now, don't call me names....I am no racist. JR has a rule, No PERSONAL attacks!!

Why can't you remember that?? You do it soooo often.

Turkey is trying to remain a non-islamic radical country...but we all know that there are dangerous islamic cells in Turkey who would just love to "punch" the present govt's. ticket and knock then OUT of power.

Yes, there are crazed radical islamics in Turkey...not in power.... but they can erupt in violence anytime...JUST LIKE WHAT IS HAPPENING in Algeria right now.

The notorious German dictator is presumed to have said the following on August 22, 1939: "I have given orders to my Death Units to exterminate without mercy or pity men, women and children belonging to the Polish-speaking race. It is only in this manner that we can acquire the vital territory, which we need. After all, who remembers today the extermination of the Armenians? While the statement in question has appeared in hundreds of publications and has been quoted several times, none of the publishers have ever consulted the primary sources. The truth is that the Nuremberg trials have never accepted that version of the Hitler speech with a reference to the Armenians as evidence.

CityGirl, your girl should be alright if she keeps her eyes open. She is safer in Greece than in France, U.K., Germany or any of the EU countries:

Country Guide: GREECE

Emergency Information

POLICE AND CRIME
Though Greece has the lowest crime rate in Western Europe, take basic precautions against petty crime. Avoid flashy displays of wealth, and dress and behave conservatively. Leave most of your cash, traveler's checks, jewelry, and your camera in your hotel safe. Carry photocopies of your passport instead of the original. Carry cash in a money belt, and use credit cards or traveler's checks for most of your transactions. Walk with your bag away from the street to avoid having it snatched away by motorcycle thieves. Never carry a stranger's baggage.

Greece is a male-oriented society, so women should dress modestly and try not to travel alone.

EMERGENCY NUMBERS
Police 100
Tourist Police 171
All-Night Weekend Pharmacy 107
Doctors on Duty 105
Emergency Red Cross Ambulance 150
Emergency IKA Ambulance 646-7811
Fire 199
Emergency Hospitals/Clinics 106
Red Cross Blood Bank 821-9391
Road Assistance (car breakdown) 104
Road Assistance (express service) 154

HEALTH
There are no serious health risks in Greece. Tap water is safe, but do not drink well water; bottled water is widely available. Try to avoid uncooked meat and sea food. Sanitation is of a reasonable standard, but carry toiletries in more rural areas and on the islands. Air pollution is high in Athens, which can lead to respiratory problems.

Medical care is adequate and a visit to a general practitioner may indeed cost you nothing. Medicines at pharmacies cost significantly less than they do in the United States. Your hotel will have access to English-speaking doctors.

Just a thought on the side.

When a liberal tells you that poverty is a cause of crime, bring up the example of Greece. Greece is the poorest nation in the EU yet has the lowest crime rates of all categories in Western Europe.

See the liberals faces change color as they try and tackle that fact!

Unfortunately for the Turks, not one credible historian disputes the Armenian genocide. Justin McCarthy isn't credible given his open collusion with the Turkish Gov. who outright deny anything happened at all. The U.S. diplomatic corps made plenty of dispatches showing the Iddihatist (Young Turk) faction, which had gained control of the Sultan's army, was systematically butchering the Armenians. Who was a main leader in the murderous Iddihatist faction? Mustafa Kemal A.K.A. Atatürk.

For a refutation of the Turkish Gov. denial:

Otherwise, read Ambassador Henry Morgenthau's account of it his book "The Murder of a Nation"

That is incorrect. Mustafa Kemal was a small time officer (colonel) who was sent (exiled) to Syria and Libya for his views. Even during Gallippoli he was subordinate to some German general. The morons you refer to were Enver, Cemal, and Talat.

Mustafa Kemal started the resistance in 1919.

Greece is a male-oriented society, so women should dress modestly and try not to travel alone.

Greece is more male oriented than the U.S., but because of that, young women dress provocatively in order to attract attention of the opposite sex. I've been living in Greece since last summer, and I can assure everyone that young Greek women do NOT dress modestly. You will still find plenty of old ladies whose only wardrobe consists of black dresses, but it's rare to find anyone under 50 who dresses like that. Frankly, many American women would be embarassed to wear the revealing attire that many young Greek women wear (particularly if they didn't have the body to get away with it).

As for not traveling alone, that's always good advice. However, Greece does have a very low crime rate, as previously indicated. I feel safer walking around Athens or Thessaloniki than I do in most major U.S. cities, particularly at night.

If she's going to the islands, chances are about 75% that her boat will depart from the port of Pireaus. Unless she's going by plane. Not trying to frighten you -- but this port is right in Athens.

I agree with you totally about women's dress in Greece -- particularly Athens and the larger cities. Pretty revealing and provocative. Way out in the country -- sometimes that's a different story, but even out there, they have television and movies.

Another interesting fact -- Greek women have much more say than many think. They control the household, the purse strings of the house, many work outside of the home. There's more control there than many perceive.
