KALKASKA, Mich. (AP) -- A Kalkaska hunter was convicted of violating a law intended to keep animal rights advocates from harassing hunters.
Virgil Jason Deater, 81, of Kalkaska, was convicted by a jury Thursday on one count of interfering with another person's hunt. He was acquitted of another count of the same charge.

I am going to send this my neighbor. She and her husband own a couple of hundred acres next door. She drives all over her property and up and down the road on opening day to scare off deer hunters. Another neighbor's son was sitting in his stand, ON HIS PROPERTY which adjoins hers, waiting for deer. She saw them, drove across the field and sat on her side of the fence honking the horn of her Lexus SUV.

I believe, I would have had to put one across her bow if she would of done this to me...

Pretty brave.
I tell ya, where I live this would have been a huge mistake. The deer hunters here aren't just stupid, they are mean to boot.
This guy would have either wound up tied to his own hood or worse.
I can't even imagine someone pulling a stunt like this and getting away with a measely little fine. No, NO!
Don't mess with these guy's. If they don't shoot you poaching or accidentally, they might just do it on purpose.

People who haras should be harassed. I'd have tied her to her car and left her there, gaged and bound.

There is a reason game wardens are armed. Percentage-wise, game wardens are assulted with deadly weapons more than any other law enforcement agency.
Why? All the people they are citing are armed, many under the influence of alcohol. I assume she is not armed, as the game wardens are, which makes it even more likely she would be shot.
You should send this to your neighbor before she gets her head mounted to some guys den wall.

Care to back up the drivel you posted with some facts?

I met a hunter one year who told the the story of a local college girl who ran through a meadow during bow season up off of the Blue Ridge Parkway, blowing an air horn. A pair of hunters stepped out of their blind right in front of her and gruffly told her if she did'nt leave, there was a good chance she would get a broadhead up her a$$.
She turned tail and ran.

PS: A funny side note about a guy I know who poaches deer around here.
The cops stop him one night and they wind up looking in his trunk. Inside they find a cocked crosbow with a bolt in it and a spotlight.
Now, naturally the officer asks him: "Why is that crossbow (which are illegal to hunt with BTW) loaded and cocked?"
My rocket scientist friend answers: "Because it's too hard to draw down when you are running"
I swear..

I assume she is not armed, as the game wardens are, which makes it even more likely she would be shot. That's a pretty negative stereotype of hunters. I have found few hunters who drink while hunting. In CA the legal blood alcohol level for hunters is 0.00% as opposed to 0.08% for drivers. The biggest reason for assaults on game wardens is not legal hunters, but poachers (although the media seldom makes a distinction) and pot growers and meth lab operators.
As far as that statistic, I know they teach it to game wardens and US Forest Service personel. One writer went to several agencies that teach that to recruits and asked them to document it, and they couldn't. He checked Justice Dept. records and as far as he could determine it has no basis in fact, but it makes great propaganda for the antis.

Stupid and mean. Where on earth do you live?
I live in Indiana. And, don't take it personally. It's not a swipe at deer hunters in general by any means.. It's just the truth.
All the ones I know are completely dangerous and stupid. Poaching is rampant (even on the highway) and you just simply have to live here and know these guy's to understand what I am talking about.
I don't hunt myself, I even have a salt block out for the deer and they come to eat the apples from my trees in the fall. But, there are way to many of them. They are not only a nusanse to motorists but they are dangerous to boot.
I don't have a problem with all hunters, I have a problem with stupid hunters.
I went to school with a guy who shot someone while hunting. He has no idea who, but the guy shot at him first.. So WHAM! He fires back. He said he never did find anyone laying so I guess it didn't kill him. Another friend's next door neighbor keeps losing cattle to the hunters (mostly the ones from out of state) that aren't exactly sure what a deer looks like I guess. Other guy's I know poach all the time, often drunk.
Yes, the budweiser & spotlight brigade lives on in rural indiana!

Honestly, it's nothing to hear a gunshot and an old truck accelerating at three in the morning..
It's kinda cool really, I feel like I live in the wild west.

I'd wager most hunters are responsible, but there certainly is a segment that believes a case of beer is as important a part of hunting equipment as a rifle and ammo (I personally know of one such individual). In a perfect world, these would be the guys who accidentally shoot themselves in the foot, instead of being the ones who hit innocent fellow hunters.
To: Sungirl
Yes, it is if you do it with the intent of interfering with lawful hunting activity.
In certain areas where I hunt, it could also result in serious physical injury to the person doing it.

I've been hunting for over 30 years, in northwest CT, PA, and now CO...and can remember maybe 12 incidences running into A-hole hunters...and they were taken to task by myself and my group.
There's always a few bad apples in the bunch...in any sport.

just because you may not like hunting, and disagree with it, does NOT give you the right to prevent others from engaging in their chosen activities...
Animal Rights groups (like PETA, ALF, and the like) would be facing RICO charges about now, in a just world...
