The Democratic primary is shaping up as Carl McCall's American dream versus Andrew Cuomo's American dynasty.
That was on display more than ever at a recent Cuomo fundraiser which featured the candidate's Kennedy relatives.
The only thing that bothers me about Andrew Cuomo is a young man trying to get ahead on the basis of a famous family name, said Senator Edward Kennedy
Actually, two famous family names. Cuomo is the son of former Governor Mario Cuomo and is married to Kerri Kennedy, the daughter of slain New York senator, Robert Kennedy.
She's a constant presence on the campaign trail, as are the couple's three daughters.
Throughout his life, Andrew has walked away from material goods and from comfort and wealth and the safe and easy path, Kerri Kennedy Cuomo said.
The Kennedy family offers more than just an endless supply of familiar names and faces. There's also the fabled Kennedy family compound in Hyannisport, Mass., where Cuomo entertains his big donors.
Cuomo served as housing secretary in Bill Clinton's cabinet and he's taking a cue from his old boss's campaign style. Just as Clinton often talked about his wife Hillary, Cuomo frequently talks about his wife.
"Anything that the Kennedys do on behalf of Andrew Cuomo is going to play out as good for Andrew Cuomo, said political consultant Norman Adler.
While Cuomo is building a dynasty, his opponent, Carl McCall is living the American dream, rising from poverty to statewide elected office.
But like Cuomo, McCall also has an accomplished wife, Joyce Brown, who runs the Fashion Institute of Technology. She attends major campaign events with her husband, but never takes center stage.
Meanwhile, Governor George Pataki is trying to create a dynasty of his own. The oldest of his four children, 23-year-old Emily, is taking a central role in his campaign for a third term. She's even starring in Pataki's most recent TV ad.
The man you call governor is the man I call Dad, she says in the ad.
The Kennedy-Cuomo daughters are also in their father's commercials. But as young children, they're not quite ready for starring roles.
Give it time. Michaela Kennedy Cuomo and her sisters have plenty of politics in their blood.
Thats what you think! The Kennedy's aren't adored in this country any more like they were. But keep doing it anyway the more desperate you look Andrew the better!
