A "Day of Remembrance" for the victims of the September 11 attacks is being held today at the Javits Center.

The event was organized by the group Give Your Voice. Governor George Pataki and former Mayor Rudolph Giuliani are expected to attend, as well as families of those lost in Washington and Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

“It's a day to pay tribute to all the people that were lost on 9/11, from Pennsylvania families to the Pentagon families to the mothers and fathers who lost sons and daughters over in Afghanistan,” said Marie Granieri, the co-founder of Give Your Voice. “We're honoring all of the people that were lost.

The Day of Remembrance began at 9:30 a.m.

Mayor Bloomberg has said he won't be able to attend because of a prior commitment to attend a police memorial.

Americans are mired in a showy morbidity the likes of which have not been seen since ancient Egypt. The only difference between Ground Zero and Giza is that workmen are hauling building materials down ramps instead of up. After we pulled out all the stops in the ceremonies marking the six-month anniversary of the attacks, what is there left to do for the first year? We are perilously close to worshiping a hole in the ground. -- Florence King, National Review, 6/3/02

I agree with you. It's time to let the dead rest.

"Americans are mired in a showy morbidity..."

No, I think it's closer to total self absorption and self pity.

Thank God the British didn't fall prey to this after the blitz.
