Pak offers China monitoring facilities on Makrana Coast

Pakistan has offered China naval facilities and listening posts on its Makrana Coast to keep an eye on Indian and American activities in the Arabian Sea and the Gulf, a Russian weekly reported.

During their visits to Beijing in 2000, Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf and Finance Minister Shaukat Aziz promised to provide Chinese Navy port facilities in Gwadar and Ormara naval bases, 'Nezavisimoye Voyennoye Obozreniye' (Independent Military Review) weekly reported in its latest issue.

They also offered to allow China to build a monitoring station on Makrana Coast to intercept US communications in the Gulf.

China has already allocated 240 million dollars for the development of Gwadar port in Balochistan and 200 million dollars for the construction of a coastal highway linking Gwadar with Karachi, the weekly wrote in the article titled 'Beijing as Guarantor of Pakistan's Security.'

While Beijing plans to use its presence in Balochistan for monitoring the US military activity in the Persian Gulf, Pakistan is compelled to depend on the Chinese navy since its own navy is weaker than that of India.

"In Islamabad's view, the presence of Chinese warships in the Pakistani territorial waters would deter surprise attacks by the Indian Navy on its installations on Makrana Coast," it said.

If this was agreed to a couple of years ago, why is it just now being reported?

Hindustantimes is an indian paper. Given the Indian naval maneuvers that occurred, they probably think it is relevant again.

Dept of redundancy dept. Maybe we'll hear about the progress of the Chinese base on the Myanmar coast sometime.

They are complaining. Maybe they think Pak should also give India a naval base.

Very interesting. Myanmar have also been making noise. Quite a bit more skirmishing on the Thai border, borders closed, shelling, etc. Similar to the LOC but no Western media attention. The first of two "tank and road mobile (x)RBM ready" roads from Kunming to the Thai heartland is to open within months (one wonders if the ethnic Chinese Bangkok businessmen who have promoted that whole idea are simply greedy and naive, or somethng far worse...). The Spratleys have been quiet but my guess is that slow burn encroachment has continued as there has been no real opposition to it by the US. I don't like the looks of all this...
