Hawaii Lawmaker Indicted

HONOLULU, Jun 29, 2002 (AP Online via COMTEX) -- A state representative was charged with filing false income tax returns and failing to report his interest in two foreign bank accounts.

A federal grand jury indictment announced Thursday stems from work that state Rep. Nathan Suzuki, a certified public accountant, did for businessman Michael Boulware.

Boulware was convicted in November of defrauding millions of dollars from the state and the Internal Revenue Service, and sentenced to four years and three months in prison and fined $25,000.

Suzuki, a Democrat, refused to testify at Boulware's trial on grounds of self-incrimination. Boulware was president of Hawaiian Isles Enterprises Inc., a major distributor of wholesale coffee, tobacco, bottled water and vending machines.

Suzuki, 54, is accused of filing false tax returns in 1995, 1996 and 1997 for not reporting his control of four bank accounts in Tonga and Hong Kong. He also is charged with failing to file another form to disclose those accounts as part of a cover-up of illegal activity.

He faces up to 29 years in and more than $1 million in fines if convicted on all counts.

Suzuki was expected to surrender to authorities in the next few days.

I was really wondering if: Suzuki, a Democrat... would appear in the story - or they were going to try the old 'Rep.' trick.

"Suzuki, a Democrat"

There is a new sheriff in town. Long gone are the days when white collar criminals can rip off decent Americans, simply by donating large sums of cash to the Clinton/Gore election campaign.

I've got a new bumper sticker slogan for all the crooked CEO's and DotBom millionaires. "We Spent Our Grandparents Retirement"

"We Spent Our Grandparents Retirement" Ohhhh, that's good. I firmly believe that these corporate thieves should have the "bonuses" they were given based on earnings retrieved. Have you seen the Multi-Million Dollar mansion one of the WorldCom execs is still building in FL? Fox News has been showing it over the past several days. Every time I see it, it reminds me of the pensioners and retirees who may never see a penny of their retirement because of the highway robbery of these corporate lowlife's! I agree with Dubya. No one should be allowed to benefit when the books were being cooked. Enron execs, Andersen and all the others past and future should be made to cough up the money. Ken Lay of Enron fame received 16 Million in bennies while the company was doing this fancy dance with options and killing the cash reserves. He and all the others should be forced to give it back.

It's kind of redundant though since Republicans were outlawed from Hawaii several years back. I think the second party in Hawaii is the Green party.

Although I doubt it is a sea-change, I think I heard that Hawaii is poised
to elect a Republican governor.
(I'd suspect she'd be a RINO, but for someone other than a Democrat to get elected
in Hawaii is noteworthy.)

"We Spent Our Grandparents Retirement"

Better than that:

"We Raided Our The Retirements of Five Generations!"

Five Generations = Grandparents, Parents, Co-Workers and Colleagues, Children and Grandchildren"
And that may actually be a low-ball estimate.
