School Board Attacks Teacher's Jelly Punishment
Fellow Students Pelt Boy With Jelly
POSTED: 8:18 a.m. EDT June 28, 2002
CREIGHTON, Mo. -- A Missouri teacher calls it creative peer discipline -- but the local school board said it's humiliating.
Eighth-grader Andy Johnson was pelted with jelly by his fellow students after refusing to participate in a reading exercise.
He was warned that he'd face consequences for not participating, and his classmates then came up with creative forms of punishment.
Andy said he doesn't find anything wrong with the punishment, and in fact thinks it's "pretty neat." His mother signed a consent form after Andy's classmates chose the punishment. His teacher gave him the option of not going through with it.
But board members said they're "horrified" -- and that the incident was a violation of the boy's civil rights.

Good question. The term 'civil rights' is thrown around constantly and has almost lost any real meaning. Sad.

Ha ha! This sounds like JAPAN, not the USA...

If it had been in an art class the teacher could have gotten a grant from the National Endowment for the Ats for this.

Ats = Arts

Both teacher and mother are out of their flippin' minds. (The stupid teacher was just following through on what she was taught in college.)

I don't see any violation of civil rights here, but I do see an incredibly stupid use of school time.
The little brat wouldn't do his reading assignment? Fine, give him an F. Having the entire class waste time that should be spent learning is a waste of your money and mine.
A simple explanation given by a local talk show host here in Minneapolis today is that the teacher obviously, "went nuts". Then he played, "It's the End of the World as We Know It, and I Feel Fine..."
I couldn't help but agree.

Pardon me, would you please pass the Polaner? The little crumb cruncher was warned of the repercussions related to his insolent behavior. He has only himself to blame for being in the sticky situation. I think the punishment was a berry good idea. Your comments however are not so grape.

Obviously, the teacher was dealing with a sticky situation. When a student acts berry bad, however, a good teacher preserves order.

My comments are not so grape, but yours are just peachy, I suppose??? Have a raspberry! Phhhttt!

I don't know who is stupider..
1) The teacher for coming up with such a "punishment" (or agreeing to it anyway)
2) The student for accepting it.
3) The kids mom for signing a waiver allowing her son to be pelted with jelly.
This is your tax dollars at work? You're kidding me..
"Well, hi little bobby.. what did you learn in school today? The Constitution? Math? What? "
"Uh, well we all sat around and helped the teacher dream up punishments for someone who wouldn't join us in a reading project"
"You mean the teacher couldn't do that herself? "
"Guess not.. "

Could have been National Endowment for the Arse to be more in tune with the times.

....Eighth-grader Andy Johnson was pelted with jelly by his fellow students after refusing to participate in a reading exercise. .....
I wonder if Andy actually knows how to read. With social promotion, it's possible that he can't. An eighth grade non-reader, but good faker, would probably prefer being pelted with jelly than being exposed.
Rod Paige seems to be the Secretary of Education, unlike former Secretaries of Public Schools. Another reason to admire President Bush.

Andy said he doesn't find anything wrong with the punishment, and in fact thinks it's "pretty neat." Doesn't sound like "punishment" to me. It just sounds like a good excuse for Andy to refuse to read again.

It wasn't punishment, punishment would've been leaving the jelly in the bottle.
