Dog in Mercy Dash to Save Farmer's Life
Fri Jun 28, 9:20 AM ET
VIENNA (Reuters) - An Austrian farmer's faithful dog saved his life by running for help after a hay-making machine sliced up the 62-year-old's left foot, police said on Friday.
The farmer was working alone on Thursday except for Tschibsi, his one-year-old Alsatian mixed breed, and could have bled to death without help, police in Upper Austria province said. Tschibsi ran two km (more than a mile) after the farmer's wife as she bicycled into town and barked and whined until she came back. The wife called for a medical helicopter that took her husband to a hospital, where he was recovering.

"Woof!"
"Was ist es, Lassie? Was sagen Sie, Mädchen? Sie sagen, daß Vater seinen Fuß mit der Heumaschine geschnitten und sofortig ärztliche Behandlung benötigt hat?"

What? No PETA lawsuit pending for making the dog run over a mile to get help.

Another example of why animals should have some reasonable level of rights, and not be treated under the law just like inanimate objects. Let's see your sofa knock itself out to run for help when you've sustained a potential fatal injury.
To: GovernmentShrinker
I agree with where you're going with this but I believe that they already have many more rights than an a sofa. For example, many pets are removed from "bad homes" and people are prosecuted for mistreatment of pets. Hardly ever for tearing the tag off their sofa. : )

Wait a minute. Why is it that these stories are always about dogs performing such amazing acts to help their owners? What about cats? Surely a cat would do the same thing? < /sarcasm >

We need more dogs and fewer Liberals.

There are already laws to protect animals from abuse and neglect. Just curious.

"An Austrian farmer's dog saved his life when he ran for help..." Good on ya, mate. Throw a shrimp on the barbie for that doggie.

I have seen stories of cats doing similar things, like one who woke up a mother when her infant had stopped breathing in its crib, and another who alerted a sleeping family to a fire in their home. Cats aren't capable of making as much noise as dogs, so their attempts to alert humans to emergencies are probably heard less often.

Dolly the English Pointer says ..."Good Dog!"

I thought it said "Australian", too, instead of "Austrian", until I went back and saw "Vienna".

Surely a cat would do the same thing? A cat doesn't have to. A cat owner is smart enough to not stick his feet in farm machinery. ;-) Just kidding, just kidding. I like 'em both.

Since I made a joke at dog owners' expense, let me make one about cats now.
I have seen stories of cats doing similar things, like one who woke up a mother when her infant had stopped breathing in its crib, and another who alerted a sleeping family to a fire in their home.
In the first instance I bet the cat stole the baby's breath (old wives tale) and in the second, the cat probably set the fire accidently while smoking- in both instances the cat was probably like "sh!t, I better go wake up stupid or they'll be mad at me and get a dog." ;-)

A cat would only perform such an act to preserve his meal ticket.
Just my $0.02...
