The NYPD is so strapped for applicants that it is lowering standards to admit recruits with DWI arrests, The Post has learned.
Background checks on 100 of the 2,800 new recruits who'll enter the Police Academy on Monday reveal that nine were busted for driving while intoxicated, police sources said.

Are these convictions for DWI or are they arrests for DWI. There is a difference y'know. Or are you saying that if the fuzz arrest you, you are automatically guilty?

Well at least they weren't busted for POT so when they graduate they will be able to arrest the POT dealers with a clear conscience

Yes, I'll have three chocolate glazed donuts, and a shot of your best whiskey! And a beer to wash it all down. Thanks.

Well at least they weren't busted for POT The way I read it, one of them was, and they're considering accepting another one.

The heroic acts of officers on Sept. 11 spurred an increase in applicants, but this was offset by the loss of thousands of officers who decided to retire after earning large amounts of overtime after the tragedy. NYPD pensions are calculated on earnings in the last year on the job.
I'm tempted to say only in New York

They must be pretty desperate. First they went to colleges and now this. I guess noone wants to be a NYC Cop. Its a shame.

Admitting cops with DWI arrests appears to fly in the face of Police Commissioner Ray Kelly's new policy that any officer who drinks and drives - on or off duty - and seriously injures someone will be booted from the force. Oh, how draconian!! You mean, cops might actually have to turn in their badges for doing getting snockered and demolition-derbying their way home through city sidewalks? Gee, next they'll be actually arresting these more equal pigs for blowing over the limit. What's the world coming to when the exempt are subject to the laws designed for the peasants?

"Gee, next they'll be actually arresting these more equal pigs for blowing over the limit."
Actually they're less equal, and understandably so. Do you know anyone that has lost their freedom AND their job for DWI?

No money, a pat on the back and membership in the "I'll be sacrificed to Sharpton in a heartbeat" club don't go far with too many college grads.
We'll find out down the road whether the amount the city will pay out in lawsuits will be more or less than what they would have paid to attract better candidates.
