Woman Sentenced For Cane Beating Death Anderson Will Serve 18-Plus Years
Jun 27, 2002 5:28 pm US/Central (WCCO)-(Minneapolis)-A Minneapolis woman who beat a man to death with his own cane in April was sentenced Thursday to more than 18 years in prison.
Robin Mary Anderson, 41, pleaded guilty last month to second-degree murder for the death of William Avance, 77, of Brooklyn Center, Minn.
Hennepin County District Judge Beryl Nord sentenced Anderson Thursday to 18 years and nine months in prison, which was six years and three months more than the sentence specified in state sentencing guidelines.
Nord added to the sentence because of the vulnerability of the victim and because Anderson treated him with particular cruelty.
On April 8, the Brooklyn Center Police Department received a report from a Meals on Wheels driver that something was wrong at Avance's home. The driver had found Avance's garage door and home service door open, but he got no response after knocking repeatedly.
Police found Avance sprawled across the doorway of a basement bathroom, his head and face covered with blood and cuts on the back of his hands.
A neighbor told police that Anderson had befriended Avance, who had no family in Minnesota. Anderson admitted to police that on April 7, she argued with Avance and struck him with her hands, forearms and elbows before knocking him to the ground and beating him with his cane.
After Avance fell, Anderson went through his pockets and took his money, then left him bleeding on the basement floor and fled.
