Politics Democrat turned republican endorses democrat Wednesday, June 26, 2002, 5:50 PM

MARION COUNTY, June 26 - This is interesting at best. A former democrat turned republican says he's still a republican as he endorses a democrat. And oddly enough no one is surprised. So turns the world of Marion County politics.
Former Marion County Sheriff Joe McAtee says he is still a republican. But some would argue that if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck and talks like a duck, it's a duck. And Wednesday McAtee, who lost his bid for the republican nomination to Tom Schneider, walked back into the spotlight to endorse a democrat, which has some republicans saying, quack.
McAtee says, "Im not mad or upset at anybody. I'm just doing what I think is the right thing to do in my heart."
But David Brooks with the Schneider campaign sees it differently. "Joe McAtee was a democrat in the 70s. He asked to become part of the Republican Party. We embraced him, slated him and elected him. I think it pretty well provided him with the support to get him where he is today. To have him turn his back on the party is disappointing, but not an issue for this campaign."
Eyewitness News was told republican Schneider was unavailable Wednesday.
And for non-Hoosiers, the Democrat csndidate was the U.S. Marshall who handled the Baptist Temple takeover.
