JAKARTA, Indonesia, June 26 An area of Jakarta popular for foreign travelers was attacked Wednesday by Islamic extremists who oppose the sale of alcohol, police and witnesses said. About 150 men armed with sticks and swords forced their way into cafes and smashed alcohol bottles in the area, which caters mainly to low-budget backpackers.
NO ONE WAS injured in the midday raid on the street, Jalan Jaksa, by members of the Islamic Defenders Front. Police were present during the attack but made no arrests, said Lt. Wagimin, who goes by a single name.
The Front has staged similar attacks on discotheques and bars they consider un-Islamic. It also opposes the selling of alcoholic beverages, which are prohibited by Islamic law, and has spearheaded sometimes violent protests against the U.S.-led war in Afghanistan.
Jalan Jaksa is about half a mile from the presidential palace. It is lined with cafes and cheap hotels.
The attackers smashed beer bottles they had taken from the shelves of at least five establishments on the street. They also damaged signs advertising alcoholic products, witnesses said.
Indonesia is the worlds most populous Muslim nation. Most of its 210 million people practice a tolerant form of the faith. However, radical Islamic groups, separatists and ethnic violence have surfaced since the 1998 ouster of long-time President Suharto, who relied heavily on the military to suppress all forms of dissent.
Now you've got me wondering; WHAT"S coming (war against Islam ?)
Please reply !!!
You could probably ping Trav for more of his vision of this since he's where I heard it from in the first place.
