Fuel Truck Explodes Near Daycare
FORT WORTH, Texas, 3:15 p.m. CDT June 26, 2002 - A tanker truck reportedly carrying 9,000 gallons of gasoline exploded and burned just south of DFW Airport this morning right near a daycare.
According to police, the driver escaped the fiery wreck without injury.
The ominous ball of flames and black smoke forced the evacuation of a nearby day-care center, but authorities said that the young children inside escaped injury as well.
The explosion happened near the intersection of Highway 360 and Trinity Boulevard in Fort Worth, just south of DFW Airport.
There was no immediate word from authorities on what caused the explosion.
However, video tape from the scene did not show any other evident vehicles involved in the fire.
Fort Worth firefighters poured water on the roof of the nearby apartment complex and prevented the spread of the blaze to that structure.
Firefighters from DFW Airport armed with foam tankers responded to the fire, but were unable to extinguish the petroleum blaze right away.
However, officials said that crews extinguished the fire by midday.
