Last week in Illinois, the state stopped a scheduled hike in the cigarette tax because of statistics indicating too many smokers were buying cigarettes online or out of state. The law of dimininishing returns, you see.

This is really one of those classic fence post issues, I mean, I don't smoke (cigs) but how could anyone in his right mind side with the state here? The Indians will definitely profit, and more power to 'em. But I can't see how it's an equal loss for everyone else. The budget is being balanced by disproportionally taxing a targeted minority. Why shouldn't non-smokers share in the burden of balancing the citys budget?

Figure a husband and wife, each smoking a pack and a half a day. That's $8200. per year. That's alot of money, year after year, for any couple.
