June 26, 2002 -- SHE huddles against the office-building wall, looking as guilty as a junkie and every bit as needy.

"I'm just stopping, cold turkey," Cassandra Sullivan says. "I'll toss the money I spent in a jar, then I'll buy myself a Fendi bag or something."

Last week in Illinois, the state stopped a scheduled hike in the cigarette tax because of statistics indicating too many smokers were buying cigarettes online or out of state. The law of dimininishing returns, you see.

And I thought $42 a carton was bad.

Yet another reason for anybody with half a brain to flee NYC.

Bloomberg will have the place prety well cleared out of the middle class by the end of his term.

NYC is without a doubt the worst place to live in the USA.

"The kids are going to steal to buy cigarettes," warned Aziz Mohammed, working the register at the 47 Gourmet deli. "It's going to be like drugs."

Here's the news, Aziz: Kids were doing B+Es for butts fifty years ago when cigarettes cost less than a quarter a pack. Go figure, huh, Aziz.

The whole article, by the way, reeks of that "reformed whore" superiority.

Don't worry. No matter what happens, you'll still be morally superior.

I could have sworn I said that on a tobacco thread just yesterday. Shoot, Aziz, at $7.50 a pack adults are going to have to steal to buy cigarettes.

This is really one of those classic fence post issues, I mean, I don't smoke (cigs) but how could anyone in his right mind side with the state here? Typical republican politics, no winners, everyone suffers equal losss, maybe not everyone, the indians might squeek a profit here. Good work, keep me posted.

The Indians will definitely profit, and more power to 'em. But I can't see how it's an equal loss for everyone else. The budget is being balanced by disproportionally taxing a targeted minority. Why shouldn't non-smokers share in the burden of balancing the citys budget?

Figure a husband and wife, each smoking a pack and a half a day. That's $8200. per year. That's alot of money, year after year, for any couple.

Remember the movie Soylent Green? Charlton Heston lights up a cigarette and says to his friend Edward G. Robinson "I'd smoke one of these every day if I could afford it.". Back in the '70's Sci-Fi movies were pretty corny, huh?
