June 26, 2002 -- Hell at Martha dream house

IT'S definitely no fun to be building Martha Stewart's mansion while the embattled domestic diva suffers the worst crisis of her career.

Stewart bought a $15 million, 153-acre Kanticoe Corners estate in upstate Bedford two years ago, and has been building a huge new house there to the dismay of neighbors, who include Richard Gere, Christopher Reeve, Glenn Close, Ralph Lauren and George Soros.

"Work has slowed down almost to a standstill and she's cut everyone's pay," says our construction site snitch, noting that as the ImClone scandal spreads and Stewart's stock has tumbled, "Everyone's afraid to even look at her."

Work at the site has never been a picnic. Stewart fired her original contractors after eight months because they refused to provide her with an exact accounting of their profits, says our source. And Stewart pays some of the lowliest manual laborers to spy for her and report if someone's late or slacking off.

"They literally have a stopwatch. If you're even three minutes late coming back from lunch, her manager gives you a warning and says you'll be let go next time," fumes our snitch.

With all the stress Stewart has been under because of the ImClone probe, "It's gotten to the point where everyone is so damn afraid of her and of losing their jobs, they hesitate to even make eye contact, and even her managers tiptoe around her," the source says. Not that Stewart notices:

"She just ignores you completely if you so much as say 'Good morning' or 'Hello,' " we're told. The only time she speaks is to issue orders and proclamations, and then, says our insider, "It's like Queen Elizabeth has spoken.

"The stress level is awful. The treatment is ridiculous and absurd."

Stewart's rep calls our source's account "untrue. The work is progressing nicely."

Not everyone is down on Martha. Director Barry Sonnenfeld has leapt to the defense of the doyenne of domesticity, who makes two cameo appearances in his upcoming picture, "Men in Black II."

"I'm a really big Martha Stewart fan," Sonnenfeld told The Post's Megan Turner. As for her detractors, "How dare they?" he shouts.

"If they'd brought one tenth of the joy and kindness and good taste to America that she has . . . I've run into her at a few parties for Planned Parenthood in the Hamptons, and I just think she's really cool. I also put her in 'Big Trouble' [and] I hope Martha's in my next film."

Oliver twisted

THE director of "The Exorcist" and "The French Connection" is blasting Oliver Stone for defending Palestinian bombers. After Stone called Israeli settlers "vigilantes" in a Daily Variety interview, William Friedkin fired off a letter to the editor, stating, "If Mr. Stone and I were in a land dispute, I would not be justified in murdering him or his friends and relations." Stone, the paranoid "JFK" helmer, also said that a third party should be sent into the region to keep the peace. "Will Mr. Stone volunteer his son or daughter to become part of this force?" Friedkin asked.

Bill pal keeps Naomi close

IS an aide to former horndog-in-chief Bill Clinton squiring supermodel Naomi Campbell so that his boss can be near her? A friend of Doug Band has been circulating the story that the "lawyer" and "close adviser" of Clinton is dating the dusky diva. But Band, who is merely Clinton’s personal assistant, has apparently been a conduit to Clinton’s women in the past. And the London Daily Mail and others reported last month that Clinton and Campbell, who’d been introduced at an AIDS fund-raiser in Austria in December, had an "intimate" lunch in the Alps and then "hooked up" again in London in March. "Doug took Monica Lewinsky to the 1995 Congressional Ball," notes our Capitol Hill spy. "That was around the time Monica and the president were having their fling." A rep for Campbell insists, "Naomi is seeing Doug socially but not often . . . and she is absolutely not having a relationship with Bill Clinton." A rep for Band and Clinton did not return calls.

"Everyone's afraid to even look at her."

Shades of hillary! - no eye contact.

These "tolerant, compassionate" types who publicly mouth all of the (ugh) "ideals" (barf and hurl) of the DemoRats party, treat humanity quite differently in private, where they show their true colors.

These people are so self-serving it's pathetic. They make me sick. And to think these phony Dem jerks like Hitlery are running our government. Even more sickening is that enough of these Dem dupes actually elected her.

Yes, I can see what Naomi sees in him (either one). Really, though, x42 and Naomi have a lot in common. A lot of white, powdery stuff.

Check out the guy in the background.

He must not have gotten the memo that:

is NOWHERE a self-respecting person wants to be!

LOL, I imagine there are quite a few former WH staffers from the Clinton Administration who wonder why they have such achey knees at their tender ages.
