King calls for broadened base of cooperation with India

King Gyanendra in his reply speech at the state banquet hosted by Indian President K.R. Narayanan said Monday that the government of Nepal and its people highly appreciated the Indian support to fight against terrorism, the RSS reported.

The King said terrorism is a deadly menace because it kills innocent people and strikes at the very root of civilized behaviour.

In his welcome speech Indian President K.R. Narayanan said terrorism was a matter of concern to both countries and pledged his government's full cooperation in wiping it out.

Their Majesties the King and Queen attended a state banquet hosted in their honour at the Rastrapati Bhawan in New Delhi Monday evening.

Addressing the banquet the King said relations between Nepal and India transcend the customary treaties and diplomatic conventions since time immemorial.

He also expressed appreciation for the sympathy and support of the government and the people of India during the tragic event when the Nepalese people lost their beloved King, Queen and several members of the Royal family last year and referred to valuable contributions of late Majesty King Birendra towards strengthening the age old ties between the two countries.

King Gyanendra said India had continued to be Nepal's valuable partner in development, especially in infrastructure building in key areas. He said the government of Nepal was engaged in promoting the general welfare of the people by accelerating the pace of development through multiparty democracy to achieve an egalitarian and just society based on democratic norms and values.

Referring to the potential of water resources as the greatest asset of Nepal and tourism as the mainstay of Nepalese economy as well as towards India's vast pool of technical manpower and expertise the King said a broadened base of cooperation would allow for greater development and harmony.

Indian President Narayanan said India remains committed to see Nepal as an "independent, modern, prosperous and peaceful country."

The King who began his six-day state visit by meeting a number of Indian leaders including Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee and External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh was assured India's assistance in containing Maoist problem. nepalnews.com am June 25

Is it my imagination, or has this sort of thing vastly increased since the royals were attacked by their bad seed son? From my understanding, he had been hanging out with a fairly seedy crowd, no doubt among them were Maoists who frequent the hashish dens. My theory was always that drugs, blackmail about matters related to his forbidden fiance, and perhaps his own anti-establishment leanings, were used by the Maoists to essentially brainwash him into becoming a killing machine. The whole thing happened as if by clockwork and shortly thereafter the massive increase in attacks by the Maoists. Something is rotten in Nepal. However I am encouraged by the move to align even more with India. I also understand the US have been getting involved as well. None too soon, irrational Vietnamwaraphobes notwithstanding. This spring seems to have seen the start of a new terror/insurgency campaign in Nepal. Obvious culprits, the Chinese, to harass Nepal, keep India paranoid and in general help out their Pakistani buddies.

It complements the terror campaign unleashed in Kashmir this spring that almost spiralled into a war.

Kathmandu has been a hotbed for jihadi activities for a while apparently. The Indian Airlines Flight from Kathmandu to Delhi was hijacked in 1999. After bouncing around a few Gulf states, like abu dhabi and dubai, it ended up in Kandahar, when jihadis, including Omar Sheikh of Danny Pearl notoriety, were freed from Indian jails in exchange for the passengers. One passenger, a newlywed guy returning from his honeymoon had his throat cut. Some analysts compared this to a dry run for a 9.11 scenario.

Other plots have been thwarted.

ISI has been known to have an active presence in Nepal and India points to evidence of its activities in Assam, a state bordering Nepal with various insurgencies and seperatist/secessionist movements. The communists certainly seem most active in Nepal.

But with the US and India both cooperating in Assam and into Nepal as well, unpublicised operations will continue to go after the Maoist threat.

Of note - Re: ISI in Assam. Not too far from Myanmar then, where I've heard tell of Pakistani "advisors" of late (that's in addition to the PLA / PLAN folks swarming around there...)
