Dog That Attacked Pregnant Woman To Die
Terrier Mix Bit Maine Realtor Who Was Showing House

POSTED: 7:04 a.m. EDT June 25, 2002

WESTON, Mass. -- A dog that attacked a pregnant real estate agent will be put down.

Weston officials say the owner of the 60-pound Staffordshire terrier mix has signed papers approving euthanization.

The dog, Tyson, has been held at the Natick Animal Clinic since the June 17 attack.

Tyson bit a Maine woman as she showed a Weston multifamily farmhouse.

The woman had surgery after suffering severe cuts to her stomach and left arm.

Are those the "gangasta g" type of dogs? Its disgusting that some folks breed those types of muts in order to heighten aggression.

"Staffordshire Terrier" is the hoity-toity AKC name for "pit bull."

It's only irony if the dog has a tatoo of Che Guevera and comes off second in fights with other poochies.

If they can put down this Tyson for being a vicious biter, why not do the same for his namesake as well.

The owner should get about 5 years.

Depends on whether the dog has had a vicious propensity in the past:

"If an ox gores a man or a woman to death, then the ox shall surely be stoned, and its flesh shall not be eaten; but the owner of the ox shall be acquitted. But if the ox tended to thrust with its horn in times past, and it has been made known to his owner, and he has not kept it confined, so that it has killed a man or a woman, the ox shall be stoned and its owner also shall be put to death."
(Exodus 21:28-29)(KJV)

Yes sir! That's exactly where I'm coming from. The only thing is that if you have a pet mountain lion the mountain lion doesn't have to have a record in order for you to be guilty. His record is in his kind.

Yes, but there are no tame mountain lions, and there are lots of pit bulls who are not vicious.

I can attest to that - some of the pit bulls who frequent the dog park here in San Jose are the sweetest, kissiest creatures you'd ever care to meet. They may have aggressive propensities, but it's the owner that makes the difference. Any dog, including a Bichon Frise, can be turned vicious if it's abused long enough or trained accordingly.

I've never seen a nice pit bull. They play nice when their master is around but it would be insane to allow a strange child to wonder up to a 'nice' pitbull in his own yard.

My dog is a labrador/poodle mix, so I claim no expertise, but I have heard that not all pit bulls are aggressive, and I've met some who certainly seemed friendly.

Yep. I have one and it the sweetest doggie I have ever had. They don't exactly look like pit bulls, though. They are taller and the jaw features are not quite as pronounced.

While I agree with you about the nature of pit bulls and I personally don't trust them, many, if not most, dogs will attack a strange creature, even a child, that comes into its yard. The instinct to protect its territory is strong in most dogs and is one reason people have dogs.

A couple of observations from the People's Republic of Massachusetts: First, the realtor knew ahead of time that this dangerous dog was present. She had forgotten to call ahead on this particular visit to make sure the dog was safely confined. Second, despite foreknowledge of the presence of a pitbull, she chose to bring her CHILD to the house-showing. Does anyone besides me see a slight problem with this? If I hired a realtor, I would not allow any extraneous people, kids, etc. to accompany that realtor unless they were a potential buyer. To do so is to invite a liability suit...The property owner (I believe the dog belonged to a tenant) will undoubtedly be sued for a large sum by someone who a) KNEW the dog was present, b) KNEW the dog was vicious, and C) CHOSE consciously to bring her child into that situation.

I'm sorry these people were injured, and in no way do I condone the keeping of dangerous breeds of dogs. I have to ask, however, if this would have not occurred if the realtor had shown some common sense. I don't think it's right to bring a young kid with you to work, particularly when you visit the property of another person. Don't say that out loud in Mass. however...Remember, "it was her RIGHT to bring that kid with her, and if the government provided more affordable child care for working moms, she wouldn't have been forced into that situation". The typical, predictable, liberal answer. This near-tragedy could have been avoided with two increasingly rare commodities: Responsibility and common sense.

My dog is a labrador/poodle mix, so I claim no expertise, but I have heard that not all pit bulls are aggressive, and I've met some who certainly seemed friendly.

My 15 year old daughters dog is a Shelty(sp). This is the most wonderfully behaved dog I've ever seen or even heard of. I've learned a lot about the potential for a dog to be a truely nice dog. I could be convinced of a pitbull being nice but only on an individual one by one basis and it would take a long time for me to be convinced.

Our dog has 8 kid running around and they abuse him in a hundred ways. The woman who helped us pick him out knew that he would have that so she give him a few tests as a pup. She 'bothered' him and pinched his toes and his tail and quite few other things to see how he would react. She pronounced him as having good potential to tolerate accidental abuse from kids and turned out to be right. Even with all this, I would never expect anyone else to know what I know about this dog and I would never want to expose them to the stress that rotton dogs give me.

Our neighbor had a bull terrior. He was a monster. He attacked any animal that got near him. He killed our cat in front of my daughter. When ever he looked at my babies he had the exact same look that he did when he looked at another little animal that he wanted to attack. I despised him and was glad when he finally attacked one last dog and the owner had to throw a dozen logs at him to knock him out and have him hauled away. He refused to bring him back home after he recovered.

So I've learned the vast difference between a good dog and a bad dog.

Yes that instinct is strong, so then we have to weigh the destructive potential that the dog has against the value of the child vs the value of the property being protected. There comes a point where the dog is like a 44 magnum in the hands of a child. It's foolish to have such dogs where there are neighbors. It's criminal!

I sympathize with the dog somewhat. After all, the "victim" is a real estate agent. Who hasn't wanted to bite one of those from time to time?
