He was a SEAL (Navy commando). It's my understanding that he lost part of one leg. I also hear that he participated in one or more encounters with enemy soldiers, during which some civilians were killed, and he expressed some regret in his book.
My memory of this isn't perfect, but I seem to recall that the enemy was firing on Kerry and his fellow SEAL Team members from within a crowd of civilians, essentially using them as human shields.
